About the Business
Welcome to the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA), a specialized institute at the University of Tasmania dedicated to advancing the agricultural industry in Tasmania. Located in Sandy Bay, College Road, TIA is committed to delivering highly relevant research that directly benefits the Tasmanian agriculture industry.
With a focus on industry development, research, and education, TIA strives to enable Tasmanian food producers and processors to accelerate primary sector productivity while maintaining and improving the land and water quality for future generations. Our institute emphasizes industry-relevant research and development, encourages the adoption of findings by the industry, and delivers educational offerings tailored to Tasmania's needs. We offer programs such as the Bachelor of Agricultural Science and provide training for higher degree research candidates who play a vital role in the industry's future prosperity.
At TIA, we understand the importance of fostering close relationships across the agriculture and food value chain at local, national, and international levels. These connections ensure that our research and education priorities align with industry needs and aspirations. As a joint venture between the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government, TIA was formed in 1997, bringing together the resources of both entities to create a powerhouse of scientific research and teaching capacity.
To ensure the relevance and effectiveness of our work, TIA's activities are monitored and evaluated by an Advisory Board comprising senior representatives from the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian Government, and industry stakeholders. This board advises on the strategic direction of our research, development, and extension activities, contributing to and endorsing our Strategic Plan. We are committed to progressing actions outlined in the Tasmanian Government's RD&E White Paper, "Growing Tasmanian Agriculture β Research, Development and Extension for 2050."
To showcase our achievements, TIA produces an annual Highlights Report, which features key outcomes from our research, industry development, and education endeavors. This report also includes a comprehensive list of research projects and publications, demonstrating our dedication to supporting Tasmania's agriculture and food sectors while ensuring the preservation and improvement of our land and water quality for future generations.
As a statewide organization, TIA conducts research throughout Tasmania, with teaching and learning activities taking place in Hobart and Launceston.
