About the Business
Welcome to the Finigan School of Distance Education, a public school located at Crestwood, Agnes Avenue, 77 in Australia. As an establishment committed to excellence and innovation, we strive to provide a high-quality education experience for our students.
Last week, we had the pleasure of celebrating Book Week at Finigan SDE. It was a fantastic event that brought together our students and staff in a virtual assembly. With 77 students and 30 staff in attendance, we enjoyed a range of fun activities and competitions.
During the assembly, we had the privilege of having some of our student leaders take on hosting roles. Max (Y7) delivered the Acknowledgement of Country, Alexis (Y10) hosted the student costume competition, and Aimee (Y10) and Izzy (Y9) conducted a literature quiz. It was truly wonderful to see our students step up as hosts in the virtual space.
The costume competition was a highlight of the assembly, with both staff and students going all out to win the coveted prize of 'Best dressed'. We were amazed by the creativity and effort put into the costumes, with an array of masks, fancy body paint, and recognisable outfits on display. It was heartening to see our students and staff eager to share their efforts with their peers.
Another highlight of the assembly was the literature quiz conducted through Kahoot. We received so many entries that we couldn't accommodate everyone involved. Carlie Eades, one of our teachers, achieved a perfect score of 100% responses and was crowned 'Literature Extraordinaire'. Juliet (Year 9) emerged as the most knowledgeable student with an impressive 86% correct answers. We applaud the efforts of everyone involved in this epic quiz.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who supported this student-developed and led event. Moving forward, we aim to hold a whole-school assembly at least once a term, providing an opportunity for our school community to come together and have fun online.
In addition to our Book Week celebrations, our school is currently participating in the MS Read-A-Thon. Throughout the month of August, our students are logging their reading activities and raising funds to support young people with multiple sclerosis (MS), their families, and other children with neurological conditions. The Reid family, who are part of our school community, have already raised around $250 for this cause. We encourage you to donate and support their efforts by visiting the Finigan SDE 'Reid family' team page.
We are also excited to share the achievements of our students. Keira Will, a Finigan SDE student, recently won a gold and silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago. She triumphed in the Women's Road Race and secured a silver in the Women's Individual Time Trial. These accomplishments add to Keira's growing reputation as a talented cyclist, and she has been selected for the Australian team at the World Junior Track Championships in Colombia.
At Finigan SDE, we understand that the period before HSC exams can be stressful for students and their families. We offer support and guidance during this time, ensuring that everyone feels prepared and confident. We also provide engaging and educational activities for parents and caregivers to enjoy with their children, such as our airport enthusiasts program.
As part of our commitment to public education, we celebrate Education Week, an annual event that recognizes the achievements of NSW public schools, teachers, and students. We invite parents and carers to share their valuable feedback on the draft plan for NSW public education, as we strive to continuously improve our educational practices.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the traditional custodians of the land on which our institution stands. We also honor and respect Elders, both past and present.
