About the Business
Welcome to Jimmy Melrose Park, located on the South Esplanade in Glenelg South, Australia. This beautiful park is not only a popular point of interest, but also an establishment that holds great significance in the aviation history of Australia.
At the heart of Jimmy Melrose Park stands a stunning bronze head and shoulder bust, created by renowned artist Ken Martin. This tribute is dedicated to Charles James (Jimmy) Melrose, a true aviation pioneer who captured the world's attention with his daring exploits in the skies. Raised in Glenelg's Glenwood Mansions, which is now known as Melrose Apartments, Jimmy achieved numerous Australian flying records and even set world records, all within a remarkably short span of three years.
However, tragedy struck on July 5, 1936, when Jimmy, at the tender age of 22, lost his life in a charter flight from Melbourne to Darwin. His Heston Phoenix aircraft broke up over South Melton, Victoria during turbulent weather conditions. The news of his untimely demise reverberated around the globe, leaving people grieving the loss of their "chivalrous young knight of the air."
In addition to the tribute to Jimmy Melrose, Jimmy Melrose Park is also home to the iconic Rhythm sculpture. This artwork, commissioned by the City of Glenelg in 1978, holds great significance to the local community. Created by artist Johns, the sculpture represents the intersection of two waves, forming a mesmerizing 3D structure. This conceptual notion has been a recurring theme in Johns' career, and Rhythm stands as his first permanent work embodying this idea.
As you visit Jimmy Melrose Park, take a moment to reflect on the remarkable achievements of Jimmy Melrose and the impact he had on the world of aviation. Marvel at the beauty of the Rhythm sculpture and feel a sense of connection to this iconic piece of Glenelg's public art.

"This park is always immaculate! The lawns are perfectly manicured! It is a beautiful beachside promenade! I regularly spot dolphins & seals whilst walking here! We were also lucky enough to see a Southern right whale & calf here in July 22!"
"We came here a few times when we visited Adelaide. Enjoy having picnic here in the evening. Not too crowded and the breeze is so comfortable and relaxing."
"From the Broadway Kiosk to the Glenelg Jetty this is one of the best sections of the Coast Park Trail. The park is long and narrow, lined with pines and edged on both sides by dual pathways. The views are awesome, park benches to watch from and multiple opportunities to step onto the sand. This is Kits favorite place he actually squeals when we get here"
"Lovely place to go with the kids. Good long jetty, beautiful white sand, many different playground options, soft grass on long stretches for kids to play. Amazing sunset and lot of ice cream and fish & chips shops."
