"Rude reception staff and unprofessional. I have had two referrals sent through by my doctor over a period of 2 months for an urgent issue only to be ignored and then spoken to very poorly just had staff talk over the top of me when I had asked what was happening 'Its was to hard to let everyone know what happening' was the best reply I had received. I would avoid the place if you need any serious treatment."
"I've had FOUR *so embarrassed* stays here and can't fault the beautiful patient rooms, the variety of food choices, the lovely kitchen and the serene gardens. I love the 'social room' in Ferguson Ward. I've learnt so much from Mike's powerpoint classes on dealing with mental issues with positivity, knowledge and humour. I love Blake's classes and his gentle way of teaching. I knocked 1 star off for the Nurses who will ignore patients waiting desperately at the Nurses' station for help/meds. It is infuriating to not be acknowledged and to have to wait - sometimes up to an hour - to be assisted. That part could definitely use improvement."
"I've been a patient at all mental health units in Perth. This one is hands down by a long way the worst. I went to attend group therapy which is a requirement of admission but was told it was too full and I couldn't go. That's never happened to me anywhere before ever. I tried to go for a walk and was told it was forbidden - no kidding that exactly what the nurses said. I was having a shower and the nurses deliberately walked in on me naked. Same thing happened later that day with the toilet. Could barely eat the food it was bad. That was day one. Consultants didn't even see me until day four and prescribed me an absolute mountain of new meds and then told me I was having ECT next morning. I said no because I know people who've had it and it messed them up so he dropped me as a patient. Wasn't even allowed to try to find another consultant. I submitted a complaint to the hospital and got back a we-care-but-we-really-don't-care reply. Seems the staff attitude goes right to the top. Charming place."
"Terrible place. The psychiatrists hand everything over to registrars and junior doctors who are not qualified or able to handle even the most basic of situations. When they do make an appearance you realise they don't know what they're doing either. They use ECT as a threat and weapon to move patients in and out of the hospital rather than take the time to understand and treat conditions. Group classes are too full for even inpatients to attend when they want. Most are run by counsellors who barely understand mental health and get snarky at patients who are unwell. The nurses can be quite cruel at times. They spy on patients in the common areas and feed back information to the doctors. You end up with misunderstandings and conflicts where there shouldn't be. They never dispense medications on time. This riles up the patients something bad. Sometimes the nurses don't dispense medications at all. This will somehow be your fault. The most often time you will see your nurse is every two hours during the night when they wake you to perform a mandatory check. The food is atrocious. They have hamburgers, pizzas and nachos available every night because most of the time you can't eat from the main menu it is so disgusting and stone cold. They also can't accommodate food allergies or intolerances. Pack some antacids because you will get sick eating here. The coronavirus rules are way over the top. No entering common areas without a face mask. No leaving the ward without a face mask and staff escort. No visitors without proof of double vaccination, proof of a negative rapid antigen test, and both of you have to wear a face mask. Only two visitors allowed each day. Patients have to test negative on a rapid antigen test every second day or they are thrown out of the hospital. Don't subject yourself to this nightmare of a hospital."
"It has taken over 12 months for me to write this review as we made a complaint in writing direct to the hospital but never received a reply. A family member was admitted in a terrible state. Despite having a 2 o’clock appointment there was nobody there to greet us and the person couldn’t be found. After 3/4 of an hour they put us in a room. No induction was done. Individual staff were wonderful but there were so many shift and staff changes that in seven weeks we rarely got to see staff members more than a couple of times. No continuity, always having to repeat the issues and sometimes poor handovers. Patient had weekend leave but every weekend the meds were not ready despite requesting them numerous times days earlier. Incorrect medication given. Night meds given in the morning so patient was doped out all day then not allowed to have night meds in the evening for sleep. After coming back an hour late from a weekend excursion she was not allowed to have her meds because it was late. This was despite the fact that meds often arrived a couple of hours late as an inpatient and sometimes only after numerous requests. Poor communication as patient was also not warned about side-effects of some drugs or helped through sudden withdrawal of Lorazepam. Psychiatrist overdosed patient on antipsychotics until she became zombielike and unable to form words. She then had to be suddenly removed from all medication. Patient lost 7 kg in six weeks and became severely dehydrated. (no she didn’t have an eating disorder) Family had to point it out to staff. Too many more incidents to mention but end result is patient has lost all faith in going to a mental health hospital to receive help and was quite traumatised by the whole procedure."
