A/Prof Michael Penniment AM is a highly regarded radiation oncologist based at Icon Cancer Centre Windsor Gardens in Australia. With a career spanning over three decades, he has established himself as a detail-oriented and patient-focused practitioner. A/Prof Penniment completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Adelaide in 1986. He then became a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) in 1995. Following his specialist oncology training in Brisbane, Queensland, he played a pivotal role in founding the North Queensland Oncology service in Townsville.

In 1996, A/Prof Penniment returned to Adelaide as a consultant radiation oncologist. Alongside his clinical work, he pursued further education and completed his MBA at the University of Adelaide. His exceptional academic achievements were recognized when he was honored as the highest candidate of the professions, serving as the mace-bearer during the graduation ceremony.

Passionate about expanding radiation oncology services in rural and remote areas, A/Prof Penniment established the Alan Walker Cancer Care Centre (AWCCC) in Darwin in 2010. He continues to serve as the Director of this center. Additionally, he holds the position of Director of Radiation Oncology at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Throughout his career, A/Prof Penniment has actively engaged in research, quality improvement, and governance. He has held key positions within the RANZCR, including the Government and Regulatory Affairs Committee and Faculty Board member. He currently leads the RANZCR Particle Therapy Group and is a member of esteemed cancer trial groups such as the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), and Trans Tasman Oncology Group (TROG).

A/Prof Penniment's dedication to advancing cancer treatment has been recognized internationally. In 2014, he received the Best of ASTRO award from the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the Trial Excellence Award from TROG for his work on a palliative oesophageal trial. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of radiation therapy versus combined therapy treatment in reducing swallowing complications experienced by patients with advanced oesophageal cancer.

Currently, A/Prof Penniment serves as the Director of the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and is a member of the Board of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG-AO). He actively participates in numerous Australian and international research projects, with a particular focus on planning and developing new radiation therapy facilities and improving indigenous cancer care and quality of life during cancer treatment.
