Throughout his career, A/Prof Penniment has actively engaged in research, quality improvement, and governance. He has held key positions within the RANZCR, including the Government and Regulatory Affairs Committee and Faculty Board member. He currently leads the RANZCR Particle Therapy Group and is a member of esteemed cancer trial groups such as the American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology (ESTRO), and Trans Tasman Oncology Group (TROG).
A/Prof Penniment's dedication to advancing cancer treatment has been recognized internationally. In 2014, he received the Best of ASTRO award from the American Society of Radiation Oncology and the Trial Excellence Award from TROG for his work on a palliative oesophageal trial. This trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of radiation therapy versus combined therapy treatment in reducing swallowing complications experienced by patients with advanced oesophageal cancer.
Currently, A/Prof Penniment serves as the Director of the Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and is a member of the Board of the Asia-Oceania Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group (PTCOG-AO). He actively participates in numerous Australian and international research projects, with a particular focus on planning and developing new radiation therapy facilities and improving indigenous cancer care and quality of life during cancer treatment.
