About the Business
Welcome to Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH), a major tertiary hospital located in Elizabeth Vale, Haydown Road, north of Adelaide, South Australia. As an esteemed establishment in the healthcare industry, LMH offers a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, emergency, and support services.
LMH is an integral part of the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN), which caters to a population of over 400,000 individuals residing in the north and north-eastern suburbs of Adelaide. With a rich history dating back to its humble beginnings as a small country hospital in 1959, LMH has evolved into a leading teaching institution for healthcare professionals. Our collaboration with the Muna Paiendi Aboriginal Community Health Centre, located on-site, highlights our commitment to providing comprehensive and culturally sensitive care.
At LMH, we specialize in emergency, complex, and multi-day surgeries, while also offering day surgery and various other procedures. To further enhance our services, we are investing $58 million to expand and revitalize our emergency department (ED) and construct an 8-bed Mental Health Short Stay Unit (MHSS).
As the premier hospital in the northern metropolitan area, LMH provides a wide range of services, including 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, respiratory care, stroke/neurology, general medicine, surgery, and much more. We take pride in our strong emphasis on research and staff education, supported by the LMH Foundation and a longstanding tradition of volunteering.
As part of the NALHN, we strive to foster a supportive and culturally diverse organization that encourages creativity, innovation, and collaboration across all facets of healthcare. Our dedicated team is committed to delivering exceptional care to our patients while respecting and acknowledging the Aboriginal peoples as the Traditional Owners and occupants of the land and waters in South Australia.

"Called an ambulance due to chest pain and jaw pain (possible heart attack symptoms) Off in the ambulance at 7am, taken to the Lyell, sat in an emergency room cubicle all day with minimal care until I told them I was discharging myself. Only then did they do the bare minimum so I still discharged myself anyways. Thank God I have private health insurance. I will now be increasing my level of health insurance as the public system is an absolute disgrace. The communication between the doctors and nursing staff is absolutely non existent. Taken in for chest pain. Taken off the heart monitor whilst I went for an X-ray, and not put back on it. Told the doctor I was discharging a few hours later and they tell me that is not wise, I may collapse etc. Umm if that is your concern, why have you just left me here with minimal care and no telemetry for hours?? Avoid at all costs if you can."
"Originally written at 5am and now past 4pm - still sitting in my own bloody underwear. They have me laying here bleeding into my underwear a few hours after surgery and instead of nurse assessing the area, and / or offering to redress it... She gives me a sanitary pad and tells me to "just put that in your underwear for now and they will change it properly in morning" ... Another 3-4 hours away. I've already had staff yesterday not monitor my sugar levels properly (diabetic type 1) before my surgery, which in turn made my sugar drop before surgery not once, but twice and delayed my procedure by 5 hours because of them not originally following protocol. The nurses then treated me badly and I overheard them bickering about me as a patient just a few meters away from me. My surgeons also put a huge unnecessary bandage (giant bandaid) across my stomach for no reason. I'm extremely hairy and they did not even trim me first, so I have ripped out clumps of hair and now have a sore stomach. My surgery was nowhere near my stomach. Nurses in aftercare left very confused on why they did this. I've had some lovely nurses and doctors, don't get me wrong. But this experience has been extremely unprofessional and uncomfortable to say the least. I hope this reaches someone that can make up for this experience before I decide to talk to a lawyer about my care here."
"First visit a sensation of customer care and devoted service!! This was my first experience with this hospital! Over many years it has attracted a variety of reviews - WELL now you are going too have the opportunity to read mine. Customer service fantastic - hard working, clearly under-resourced and under enormous pressure! I actually witnessed staff running in the Gastronomical area - I had a procedure which I had never undergone before - all staff doctors, nurses, helpers and team leaders were brilliant - I felt so confident in their capable, skillfill hands. Up in the wards - the same dedication was evident - kindness, skills and customer service clearly evident! Could not do enough for my fellow patients and myself! Doctors, nurses and helpers all good, no, top class! Then we come to the first place we go to on arrival, the Emergency Department! How we admire them - we sat back and witnessed their customer service and care skills with great admiration! They are also well understaffed - we saw them handle a really difficult situation! They treated us like gold, while under the pump, through a clear lack of resources - I can only speak as I found - its a four star hospital - would have been a five star if the had correct levels of staffing and workplace training - thanks Lyell Mac staff!!"
"I had really bed experience during Friday night I am giving 2 star to those who look after my daughter during the day from 7Am to 1pm. Actually what had happened my daughter she is only one and half years old she had fever and blocked nose on Thursday we took her to the GP on Friday morning GP given her antibiotics for virus but it didn’t work and Friday night around 11 pm she started having shortness of breath straight away we went to the hospital emergency department we enter there around 11:30 and did all entry paperwork and they ask us to wait in waiting area in the children ward we waited there until 01:30am my daughter was crying and nobody even check on her there was a male nurse sitting in the nursing station watching phone I asked her if anyone coming to check my daughter he said just wait there we will come . Nobody came again my husband went outside the reception area and said to them one of the lady came with blue hair she said them and the male nurse said to her they just came here only 10 minutes ago I got angry on him and I said to him “Do you have cameras there so they can check “that lady check in the computer and said yes they are here already more the 2 hours ago then that male nurse please sit I am coming to check on her I said to them at least just check on her what’s going on with her that made me annoyed he checked the obs around 0200am my daughter had high temperature and he left she was crying with pain again they didn’t even gave her Panadol the. Again around 0400 am I asked them can someone gave her Panadol she is crying then they gave her . That’s stupid male nurse who said to me he gonna arrange to Panadol but still didn’t very careless staff just hope god we won’t go again but after 700am the nurses were so good."
"Front entrance near emergency has had construction happening for so long, hope it’s gets completed sometime soon. Makes parking difficult. The multi-storey park available is good but entrance to hospital is confusing and the layout and map is really no help. Signs need to be better to avoid getting lost to get to destination for appointments. Emergency wasn’t good but neither bad, they were assisting to make the wait more comfortable, was then moved and admitted into a room within 5 hours. Then transferred rooms 3 times with 2 days was quite annoying. Nurses & Staff are mostly lovely and helpful exception of a few who clearing have no bedside manner. Doctors always send the young ones first then oversea the treatment, which care plan changes often so was hard to get some straight answers. Hospital Food has not improved. COVID restrictions put in place for visitors - main entrance to checkin with time, vaccination check, replace with new mask before entry. Another sign in a the nurses station before entry to patient room to visit. Patient visits limited to one person per patient per day for maximum 2 hours."
