About the Business
Welcome to the Australian Cinémathèque, located in South Brisbane on Stanley Place. As an art gallery, establishment, movie theater, and point of interest, we offer a unique and unparalleled experience in film and video that you won't find anywhere else.
Our screenings take place on Wednesday and Friday nights, as well as Saturday and Sunday matinees, ensuring that there are plenty of opportunities for you to immerse yourself in the world of cinema. We curate a diverse selection of films, showcasing the work of influential filmmakers and international cinema. From rare 35mm prints to recent restorations and even silent films with live musical accompaniment, we strive to provide a rich and dynamic program that caters to all film enthusiasts.
One of the standout features of the Australian Cinémathèque is that most of our screenings are free of charge. However, for ticketed film programs, our Cinémathèque Box Office opens one hour prior to the screening, allowing you to purchase snacks and refreshments to enjoy during the film. Feel free to bring your drinks into the cinema as well. As we don't screen trailers before the films, we recommend arriving early to secure your seat and make the most of your experience.
What sets us apart is that the Australian Cinémathèque is the only art gallery in Australia with purpose-built facilities dedicated to film and the moving image. We take pride in our commitment to preserving and exhibiting film, which is why we are an Associate Member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF). This esteemed organization brings together the world's leading film archives, all dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of film.
In addition to our regular screenings, we also host special events and festivals. For example, we recently showcased the Japanese Film Festival 2023, featuring the works of Kо̄ Nakahira and the New Wave on the Shores of Japanese Cinema. We've also explored the fierce visions of Mati Diop and Djibril Diop Mambéty, and delved into the animations of Dennis Tupicoff. Keep an eye on our website for the latest updates on our cinema programs and film screenings.
We are also excited to announce that we will be participating in the Into the Green World Science Festival Brisbane 2023, where we will be presenting films that explore the wonders of the natural world.
Come and join us at the Australian Cinémathèque, where we celebrate the art of film and provide a platform for cinematic experiences that are truly exceptional.

Reviews
"This used to be a cinema were people from all walks of life could go to view incredible rare films. Over the last few years screenings have become more and more 'ticketed', severely limiting access to the lower socio economic community (which I am apart of) who respected, appreciated and looked forward to visiting the cinema at Goma."
"Tickets are so cheap and the cinema was very clean. Had a wonderful afternoon watching a great movie"
"Good sized cinema showing movies worth watching."
"Whilst the cinema is fairly small, it’s wide variety of offered art house and independent films is outstanding. Would highly recommend for all looking to see a quirky independent film in a comfortable location."
"Big screen, comfortable chairs. Isn't as big as a commercial cinema but it's big enough. The sound is amazing! Apocalypse Now was the first event I went to and the audio, paired with the big screen, made it a visceral experience."
