About The Playhouse
Welcome to The Playhouse, an establishment located in South Brisbane, on Russell Street. As a point of interest, The Playhouse offers a unique experience for performing arts enthusiasts. One of the highlights of this institution is the Digital Stage, made possible by QPAC, which provides a platform for a diverse range of performances from around Queensland. Here, you can enjoy a mix of free, paid, and exclusive on-demand content, showcasing the talent of local artists.
The Playhouse is part of the larger Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), known for its contemporary menu and impeccable service. Your quintessential QPAC experience begins at the Lyrebird, where you can indulge in delicious cuisine before immersing yourself in the world of performing arts.
To ensure you don't miss the start of your performance, we recommend arriving early and taking a sneak peek behind the scenes with QPAC. Discover the inner workings of this renowned institution and gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry involved in bringing performances to life.
There are various ways you can support QPAC and contribute to a creatively engaged society. Consider leaving a legacy, partnering with us, or making a donation. Your support helps create more local works, life-changing experiences, and fosters a more connected community.
The QPAC Playhouse, with its focus on theatre and dance, is a medium-sized venue offering sweeping views of the river and city skyline. Built in 1997, this 850-seat traditional proscenium theatre is ideal for experiencing the magic of live performances. With two levels - the stalls and balcony - you can enjoy an excellent view of the stage from any seat. Access into each row is convenient via the side aisles.
When visiting The Playhouse, you will find it located on the Russell Street side of QPAC, with two entrances facing the South Bank Parklands arbour. The closest parking options include the Performing Arts Car Park or the Grey Street entrance to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre car park.
For your convenience, the Box Office is located on Level 2, and the cloakroom for The Playhouse is on Level 1. Please note that large bags and umbrellas must be left at the cloakroom to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all patrons.
To maintain a secure environment, we have updated our cloaking policy. Items larger than A4 must be left at the Cloak Room, including backpacks, oversized handbags, and umbrellas. These items present a trip hazard and are not permitted within QPAC theatres. We strongly encourage patrons to avoid bringing any items larger than an A4 sheet of paper to avoid delays during entry.
To ensure the safety and security of all patrons, QPAC reserves the right to inspect all bags and personal belongings. These searches will be carried out courteously and discreetly.
Cloak Rooms are available at each theatre for patrons with a valid ticket to a performance on that day. If you are unsure whether an item needs to be cloaked, our friendly Cloak Room staff will be happy to assist you.
At The Playhouse, you can expect exceptional acoustics, large stages, and an orchestra pit, allowing for unforgettable performances. The venue's distinctive architecture and acoustics create an immersive experience that transports you into the heart of the performance.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge and pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits, and their legacy. We recognize the strength, inspiration, and courage they have provided to current and future generations, both First Nations and non-First Nations peoples, in creating a better Queensland.
We invite you to explore The Playhouse and immerse yourself in the world of performing arts. Experience the magic, support local talent, and be part of a vibrant and connected community.
Reviews of The Playhouse
"I am amazed by this venue. We watched the circus Duck Pond and only got tickets in the 4th row from the back. We were a bit worried about the view, but it was so much better than expected! The preview of the view on the booking website is very accurate. Even in the last rows you have a great view of the stage without turning your head. The seats are very comfortable as well. Would visit more often, if I was living in Brisbane!"
"I’ve seen a few different productions here. Musicals, contemporary dance and ballet. The seats in this theatre are the most comfortable of all QPAC. It’s great when an orchestra plays with the production."
"Yesterday 20/4/23 my friend and I went to see Giselle at the Playhouse QPAC. After reading Li Cunxins book "Maos last Dancer". My interest in Ballet became so intense. I never really understood how much Ballet dancers go through with their training etc. to become wonderful dancers. I suppose I never really thought about it before. I really loved Li Cunxins book soooooooo!! much that when I saw Giselle advertised I really wanted to see it. After yesterday, I now appreciate Ballet so much more and will be going along to many more events. I heard he was in the audience yesterday. I really wanted to meet him and give him a hug!! But I could not see him. Thank you so much for introducing me to this wonderful world of Ballet Li. XXX"
"Going to QPAC for 14 years and didn't know this theatre existed, whoops. Ultra comfy chairs and great view from the balcony with no one blocking your view. Sound was fantastic and for a play I liked that effects like projecting on to props was happening. Get in early to go to the wine bar downstairs. If it's raining you can walk through the middle of QPAC to the Lyric and Concert Halls."
"Absolutely excellent! We saw Mystery of the Valkyrie play. Great story, brilliant cast, amazing stage sets!!!!!"
