"A lovely doctor that put me at ease with moving forward with a plan to beat the not lovely CANCER"
"I found the experience with Dr Wan as a private patient over a period of 13 months traumatising. Based on my own interactions with him, my view is Dr Wan lacks the emotional intelligence needed to treat women unlucky enough to be facing or dealing with gynaecological cancer. At the first appointment he failed to ask questions or take any history from me. This generated problems down the track when an incomplete and incorrect history that in some aspects was highly embarrassing contaminated my paperwork, and referrals to other specialists. Dr Wan did not speak to me before he performed major abdominal surgery nor did he seek my consent for UNSW students to observe. A number of UNSW students observed my surgery without my consent whilst I was under a general anaesthetic including a hysteroscopy procedure. I was discharged by Dr Wan following my surgery with a document entitled ‘draft discharge’ that had been prepared three days earlier, wasn’t up to date and with the date of discharge recorded as [XX]. I was also discharged by Dr Wan whilst I was suffering with ileus. I had been complaining about the ileus and abdominal pain before Dr Wan discharged me but was ignored. The abdominal pain on the first night at home after discharge was next level and I actually contemplated cutting myself back open to relieve the pain. About four weeks after my surgery Dr Wan telephoned me completely out of the blue and without warning delivered a cancer diagnosis to me over the phone. He offered no support at all at the time he telephoned me and gave me the diagnosis, and didn’t even ask me if I was ok. There was no empathy or care in the delivery of the diagnosis. Dr Wan put me into an MDT (multidisciplinary team) meeting through the Royal Hospital for Women and his paperwork indicated there was no input or discussion at the MDT from any other specialist other than himself. I found this bizarre so I organised another MDT at another cancer centre and it was so much better, I had options, it was patient focussed and comprehensive with medical oncology input including consideration of other testing, trials and studies. I found Dr Wan’s treatment of me to be process driven and I felt I was part of a flow diagram rather than there being any patient focussed treatment. I found Dr Wan did not take the time to listen to me. I felt I needed to advocate for myself. He contradicted the advice of a preeminent Australian endocrinologist whom he had referred me to. This caused me to second guess myself and I had to organise another appointment with the endocrinologist in my own time and at my own expense to clarify the situation and to give me some certainty. Dr Wan misinterpreted my pathology findings and misreported to my GP advising that cancer had spread to other areas when it hadn’t. At one appointment he failed to review or discuss my imaging which he had referred me for. Next, he cancelled a Telehealth 2 minutes after the appointment was supposed to start. I tried to stick it out giving Dr Wan the benefit of the doubt on numerous occasions to avoid having to start all over again with another doctor, but the final straw was when Dr Wan failed to give me the results of a PET scan that contained adverse findings that he had referred me for in a professional and timely way. My experience was that Dr Wan had absolutely no self awareness as to the distress he was causing. Whether you are a private patient or a public one in Royal Hospital for Women based on my experience my strong advice to you would be to avoid Dr Wan. For the above reasons I felt very unsafe in his care. I have never experienced anything like it from any other doctor. Overall an experience I hope no other women ever has to go through and one I hope never to repeat. EDIT: Dr Wan did not reach out to me directly before posting his response below. Dr Wan's online and public response implies a recent awareness about my negative experience. In actual fact Dr Wan has been on notice the majority of my concerns since 17 November 2022 via email. Thereafter his care of me only got worse."
"The second I met dr Wan I knew everything was going to be ok. His calm and quiet confidence instantly put me at ease. He saved my life, nothing more needs to be said"
"Very friendly, encouraging and approachable surgeon. Did a great job on my minor surgery and I'm very grateful for his awesome care."
