"My home ground. Pretty countryside. No sign of the hedge school that I'm aware of. Certainly no monument. But my mother told me there was one there."
"There is not much to see here but this was a site of a large hedge school. In the early 18th century, the dispossessed Dominicans from Athenry had a school in the woods here. In his account of it, John O'Heyne states that 200 of the boys had the surname Burke. The students (all boys) lived in huts in the forest and attended lessons in larger huts. They returned home for the harvests and other busy times. The school moved to Esker and subsequently to Newbridge via Yeomanstown where it remains a college to this day."
