The park is nestled into a sweeping hillside, offering breathtaking views that span across seven counties to the south-east.
At the heart of Heywood Gardens are the formal gardens, designed by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. It is believed that the celebrated designer Gertrude Jekyll played a role in landscaping these gardens, adding her touch of elegance and beauty. The gardens are made up of various elements connected by a terrace that once graced the front of the now-vanished house. One of the most striking features of the site is a sunken garden, boasting an elongated pool and a magnificent central fountain.
Your Heywood experience begins at the Gate Lodge, where you will find information panels and signage to guide you through the magical Lutyens gardens and the surrounding romantic landscape. The institution also offers limited access for visitors with disabilities, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the beauty of this place.
As you explore the grounds, you are welcome to bring your furry friends along, but please remember to keep them on leads at all times. Additionally, it is important to exercise caution around the deep water of the lake in the parklands and to wear suitable footwear, as the terrain can be uneven.
Located just 7 kilometers southeast from Abbeyleix, off R432 to Ballinakill, Heywood Gardens is conveniently adjacent to the grounds of Heywood Community School. It is a unique attraction where history and geology merge, offering visitors a glimpse into the magnificent neo-classical architecture of the past.

"Very nice place for an afternoon walk or for a picnic. Ruins of castle with beautiful views, well kept gardens, lovely parks, woodland and lake. Worth to visit it. Big parking at the entrance, toilets, notice boards showing interesting history of the place."
"Beautiful walk with some really nice photo ops. Gardens are maintained really well. Well worth the visit. Such a pity the house is not there anymore."
"Fancied a drive on this beautiful summers day in July. Prepared a bite to eat for the journey, few supplies and I ended up in bealady graveyard in Rathdowney to visit my Mother's grave for the first time since before the pandemic, possibly a few years too long. Anyway I done some general cleaning of the grave, visited my Brother in law's, my Grandmother and Grandfather and God Uncle Pat's grave and a few people I once knew. Done a bit of weeding and general clean then lay down in a quiet part of the graveyard. After leaving I stopped off at circle K garage to get fuel for car β¬2.11 diesel which was the cheapest I've seen all week. They have a supermacs on site which was quite busy but I picked up a coffee, sausage roll, apple turnover and fudge Sunday from granny's he shop to lead me on my way. Where I stopped off at Heywood Gardens took a few snaps and on my way back towards Portlaoise that's when I got the idea to drive to Rock of Dunamase to finish the journey and try catch last of the sun light. I'm grateful to live in such a wonderful part of Ireland. Good day overall."
"A walk, you pass a grotto circle a large lake with ducks up a steep hill to manicured gardens. You can walk out into the village past the fishing lake."
"The whole place is absolutely stunning, the Grotto, old Orangery, Sham castles, but by a mile, it has the most spectacular walled garden we've seen to date. After we dragged ourselves away from there, we went for a walk around the lake which let the children run off some energy. Will definitely go back again. Spotless toilets at the carpark."
