"Short walk across the park from Higher Buxton, friendly staff, rooms in process of modernisation so a bit mixed in appearance, shower room good, windows not as can hear outside traffic, nevertheless room comfortable, breakfast good slightly on the small side but adequate as out for lunch early afternoon. Vfm about right as included breakfast."

"We stayed here as a stopover on a long journey from Scotland to Kent and were very pleased with the service and the breakfast particularly. The hotel is currently undergoing some renovation but this did not impact our stay and it is a little dated in places but our room was spacious, clean and warm. For the price we paid for a night's stay and breakfast we felt it was very good value for money."

"Staying in the Portland hotel was a very pleasant experience. The staff are all extremely friendly and welcoming. The breakfast served was made freshly and quickly and was delicious. The room was a bit dated but overall fine. It was warm enough during the cold weather which was great. The hotel is also in a great location with the Pavilion gardens across the street and the town cwnter only a 10 minute walk. I definitely recommend staying here!"

"Fabulous staff, big thanks to Robert and the team. We had room 30 - a bit run down and needed a bit of a scrub, but bedding was spotless & room smelt fresh. It would appear that the hotel is being 'done up' room by room, ours had not been done yet. Lovely big tree outside the window, with lots of birds & owls at night ! Lots of beautiful period features throughout the building. Great breakfast in clean, bright, airy breakfast room, again, staff were brilliant, efficient & friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Great location next to Pavilion Gardens, 10 mins walk to market place, & free parking outside the door. Free WiFi available."
