The Gyle 16-18 Argyle Square, London WC1H 8AS

"The Gyle is a fantastic find in a really brilliant spot near to Kings Cross and St Pancreas but on a square that in 8 nights there was super quiet. Not an area Id normally stay in but within walking distance of the coal drop yards etc was perfect for a work thing. My room was big for London- Room 22 - and had a balconey. Very comfortable bed and clean. Room had everything I needed- its not a full service hotel but had tea coffee in the room hair dryer etc. Staff are very helpful and welcoming as well. Breakfast in mornings is served in their bar area and I also had a brilliant toastie one afternoon (like a club sandwich toastie- huge!!), and they have great wine. I enjoyed my stay there! "An example of style over substance. Staff were friendly and rooms are lovely at surface level. A lot of thought has gone into its quirky aesthetics however zero thought into sound proofing. I could hear everything from the side, above and below. My room stank of sewage and when I took a shower the water smelled terrible which was quite unsettling. Then the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night. A fire team turned up to inspect. No explanation or evacuation was given. Complimentary breakfast was a joke hardly any variety and the coffee was undrinkable."

"Given a room in the basement which was right underneath the bar and reception. The noise was horrendous- people shouting for hours and stomping up and down. We were woken up multiple times. Got to a point where we couldn’t take the noise and spoke to reception where a very rude lady said ‘well if you’d told me earlier I would have swapped you’. Absolutely 0 care- do not stay here!"

"I gave it 1 star only for its great location, otherwise I do not recommend. It’s freezing cold in the bathroom. So taking shower highly uncomfortable. And it’s cold overall in the room. There aren’t any hooks in the bathroom for towels and clothes. We had to make tea on the floor because cable is not long enough to make it on the table. Bed and pillows are not comfy at all, didn’t get a good night sleep. No bin in the room as well. The design of the room just wasn’t thought through. Walls are paper thin you can hear anyone from outside and inside. Cleanliness is not very good as well. Tons of dust on the walls and other surfaces. Keep in mind they don’t have a lift, so you are going to carry all your bags throughout tiny narrow stairs. I chose this hotel only for its location but next time definitely will look for another hotel in this area."

"The Gyle did not meet up to our expectations. Here is our experience. 1. The hotel is three stories tall but there is no elevator; my wife's bum knee was not happy. 2. The room was odd. It was dark even though there was a multitude of lighting fixtures. There was no desk or hotel telephone. There was also no proper "bathroom." In its place there was an enclosed glass casing of about 2 square meters (half toilet/half shower) jutting into the room; a door to one side opened directly onto the toilet — one had to pass by the toilet to reach the shower. 3. The shower door had a curious auto locking mechanism that resulted in my wife being locked into the small shower cubicle for ten minutes after her shower owing to a malfunction. As there was no hotel phone, I had to get dressed to go down for help. Eventually, the door unlocked on its own without explanation. The hotel staff on site were bewildered. 4. Our second night the fire alarm went off in our room for about 30 seconds before stopping on its own. The next morning the hotel staff knew nothing about it. 5. Breakfast was more than the advertised continental breakfast but there was no decaffeinated coffee and they use Kleenex as serviettes. 6. On the other hand it was clean."
