His dedication to advancing maternal-fetal health led him to establish the Advanced Fetal Therapy program at Miami Valley Hospital in 2010, where he now serves as the Medical Director of The Perinatal Intensive Care Unit. He is also a principal investigator for the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD Maternal-Fetal Medicine Network, focusing on improving outcomes for pregnant women and premature infants.

With a strong commitment to education, Dr. McKenna is a clinical faculty member at Wright State University. He actively participates in various local and state initiatives aimed at reducing healthcare disparities and infant mortality.
