Welcome to Carr's Island Preserve, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the lower Altamaha River in Darien, Georgia. Located just west of Interstate 95 in Glynn County, this 367-acre park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural history. Once a thriving rice plantation established in the 1760s, Carr’s Island has transformed into a sanctuary of marshes and cypress forests, providing a glimpse into the diverse ecosystems of the region.
Explore the lush landscapes where remnants of abandoned rice fields have evolved into vibrant tidal freshwater marshes, teeming with wild rice, cut grass, and the rare beautiful false dragonhead. Marvel at the island’s original freshwater tidal cypress-tupelo forests, home to sweetbay, red maple, and swamp rose. These diverse habitats support a wide array of plant and animal life, making Carr’s Island a haven for nature enthusiasts and wildlife observers.
Donated to The Nature Conservancy in 1996 by the generous Jones family, Carr’s Island Preserve is managed as a natural and interpretive area. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility and natural wonders of the island via canoe trails, offering an immersive experience in this enchanting swamp and marsh environment. Please note that access to the preserve is remote and exclusively by boat, with a launch available from the nearby Wildlife Management Area.
Carr’s Island is open to the public during daylight hours without the need for a reservation. While the preserve is not ADA accessible, it promises a rewarding adventure for those who make the journey.
