About the Business

Potter Schoolhouse

Welcome to Potter Schoolhouse, an iconic landmark nestled in the charming town of Bodega, California. Located at 17110 Bodega Lane, this historic building is best known as one of Alfred Hitchcock’s filming locations for the classic thriller, "The Birds." Built in 1873, the Potter Schoolhouse, with its striking white wooden architecture, played a pivotal role in bringing Hitchcock's vision to life. Although it once served as a community center, inn, restaurant, and guesthouse, the schoolhouse is now a private residence. We kindly ask visitors to respect the privacy of the current owners by admiring the property from a distance.

Just a stone's throw away is the picturesque St. Teresa of Avila Church, another key location featured in the background of several memorable scenes from the film. This historic church, dating back to 1860, offers a glimpse into the past and a connection to the cinematic history of "The Birds."

Film enthusiasts and history buffs alike will find Bodega Bay a fascinating destination, with other notable locations such as The Tides Wharf & Restaurant, where Hitchcock filmed the boat dock and restaurant scenes, and the nearby town of Valley Ford, where some of the film's iconic moments were captured.

Every year, the Artisans’ Co-op of Bodega celebrates the legacy of "The Birds" with a large-scale event and special art showcases, providing a unique opportunity to support local artists and learn more about the film's impact on Sonoma County.

Whether you're a fan of classic cinema or simply exploring the scenic beauty of Sonoma County, a visit to Potter Schoolhouse and its surrounding landmarks offers a captivating journey through film history and local culture.

"The Birds!!!! This is one of the few iconic locations still surviving after the movie was filmed 61 years ago. The restaurant ...burned. The gas station...gone, The phone booth....gone. The pier where Tippy boards the dingy....gone. The house with the dock across the bay.....gone. There are still the descendants of the birds in Bodega Bay and Bodega, but they are somewhat less-menacing than their ancestors. They hardly even tried to pick out my eyeballs :-("

"We enjoyed a quick visit to the Potter Schoolhouse, the location from the movie, "The Birds". It seems to now be the residence of a local family, so unfortunately, it's not possible to take a tour, but we enjoyed both seeing the house as well as the historical aspect, and with there being so much else to do in the Bodega Bay area, a quick stop at this location is just right."
