About the Business

Congregation Zvi Jacob

Welcome to Congregation Zvi Jacob, an Orthodox Jewish Synagogue located at 110 Memorial Parkway, Utica, New York. With a rich history dating back to 1869, we proudly serve the Jewish community in Utica and the Mohawk Valley region of Upstate New York. Our synagogue is the result of the merging of several historic congregations, including the House of Jacob and Tifereth Zvi, making us the only remaining Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Utica.

Our congregation is a vibrant and diverse mix of Ashkenazi, Bukharian, Russian, and Spanish-Portuguese Jewish families. Over the past five years, we've welcomed many young families, invigorating our community with new energy and spirit. We are committed to providing a welcoming home for those seeking to observe the mitzvot on Shabbos and Yom Tovs in the Orthodox tradition.

At Congregation Zvi Jacob, we are proud to oversee several historic Jewish cemeteries and actively participate in the local Jewish Community Center. Our synagogue features a comprehensive library with a wide selection of Jewish books, including full sets of Talmud Bavli, Mishna, and Midrash. This year, Rabbi Matasar is teaching Tractate Sukkah and began a class on Ein Yaakov Moed Katan / Chagigah, dedicated to the memory of Dr. David Block. Rabbi Charitonow and Dr. Giora Katz also offer weekly classes, enriching our community's learning experience.

Despite being in rural Upstate New York, our Orthodox Jewish community is thriving. This year, we joyfully celebrated three bar mitzvahs and one bat mitzvah, demonstrating our growth and commitment to Jewish life. We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the Tisha B'av minyan and extend heartfelt congratulations to Mel and Judy Oster on their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mazel tov!

For our community's kosher needs, Market 32 on Genesee St now offers frozen kosher meats. Additionally, kosher meats are available at Trader Joe's in Syracuse and by special order from a kosher butcher in Rochester. We encourage you to support these stores to ensure the continued availability of kosher products in our area.

Join us at Congregation Zvi Jacob, where we not only pray together but also celebrate and strengthen our bonds as a community. For more information, please contact us at (315) 797-2131 or visit us at our historic location in Utica.

"This is a great shul. Very welcoming. I travel all over the country going to unsuspecting shuls as a Shomer Shabbat OTR truck driver and this is a great shul to make minyan with orthodox flavor. Worth the stop. Won’t be disappointed."

"This Synagogue is a small humble shul that upholds the Jewish law & Torah where you can always come to worship and feel closer to g-d. They pray in a primarily askenazi/orthodox style, but you do not need be orthodox to daven there, as I am not myself. You can pray at your own pace and no one will judge you. I grew up in a nearby neighborhood so I went there with my family since I was a small child. I have moved out of Utica many years ago, but whenever I come back to visit the doors are always open for me and they are happy to have me and I am happy to be there. I have been to many synagogues & temples in bigger cities from Buffalo to Boston & NYC, even Israel so I know even though not as large and glamorous as others, there is something special about this place. They have always had very good & passionate Rabbi’s who live next door to the synagogue and are very dedicated. During the high-holidays they always bring in an excellent cantor for the services. Unfortunately over the years the congregation has dwindled due to people dying off and the general lack of Jews in the area. Which has been sad for me to see, but like the light that burned miraculously for 8 days in the Temple in Jerusalem, this Synagogue still stands today. To the person who left a bad review about converts abusing elderly & infirmed, I can tell you I have never seen this happen there in all the years I have experienced so I have no idea what he’s talking about. But I am sorry he felt that way. Most of the congregation are actually elderly and this would never be allowed in this Synagogue. Zvi Jacob will always have a special in my heart, and I only hope that with the will of the almighty Hashem above that it will continue to exist. It will always have a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to come back for services. Amen."
