About the Business

St. Thomas More's Church

Welcome to St. Thomas More Church, the spiritual heart of St. John's University, located at 80-00 Utopia Parkway, Queens, New York. This freestanding church serves as a sanctuary for the university community, embodying the spiritual identity and mission of St. John's. Established through the generous support of John '63C, '66L, '93HON and Anita Brennan, St. Thomas More Church opened its doors on September 27, 2004, offering a space for worship, reflection, and community engagement.

Nestled at the center of the Queens campus, the church stands between the Residence Village and the Great Lawn, with its front entrance facing St. John Hall. Inside, the church is adorned with exquisite hand-crafted mosaics and stained-glass windows from Italy, depicting scenes of Vincentian history and the founding of St. John's University. A special 9/11 shrine offers a place for reflection and remembrance for those affected by the tragic events.

St. Thomas More Church is open to the public and hosts weekly student and community masses, along with prayer services and vigils throughout the year. It also serves as a gathering place for religious organizations, such as Campus Ministry, fostering a spirit of love and service.

The church is dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all. We offer sacraments, including Baptisms and Weddings, to students, staff, faculty, administrators, and alumni. Hand sanitizers are available for your safety, and special programs are offered during Advent and Lent.

Join us at St. Thomas More Church, where the community comes together to embrace faith, celebrate milestones, and prepare for lives of service. For more information or to schedule a visit, please contact us at 718-990-1849 or email [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming you to our vibrant community.

"11.4.23 My 1st time visiting the campus, so I popped in to church to say a quick prayer. I was stunned at the beautiful interior. It was a peaceful, vibrant, spiritual experience. The circular entrance has walls covered with religious images made out of tiny mosaics and stained-glass pieces."

"I haven't been to many churches, but I know Saint Thomas More Church isn't your typical Church. I really like the architecture of the building, it's very modern with a circular layout, unlike the usual altar at the front with the benches all parallel and neatly lined. In this church, the altar is in the center of the room with custom benches that are curved creating a circle surrounding the altar; a very unique and nice look. There are a few large windows which allows natural lighting to get in. This church has a really nice open space and I could imagine it to be a great place to meditate and pray."
