"My mother's funeral service was here in 1987. The officiating priest read out the alternates in all the prayers. (her/him, she/he, etc.) He had no concept of what to call a woman. My relatives turned to stare at me. My visiting friends from Manhattan finally broke down and laughed at his awfulness. I paid a lot of money at the time for the service, and it was dark in the church, with few lights turned on."
