Welcome to the Brooklyn Public Library - Sunset Park Branch! Located at 5108 4th Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, our library is a cornerstone of the community, offering a wide range of resources and services for everyone. Whether you're looking to borrow books, tools, or museum passes to over 80 cultural institutions, we have something for you.
Our library is a hub for genealogical research, providing guides and resources to help you explore your family history. We believe in the power of community involvement to keep our library a vibrant and vital cultural and civic center.
Our story began on December 9, 1905, when we opened as the South Branch in a beautiful Classical Revival-style building funded by Andrew Carnegie. Although the original structure was replaced in 1972, our commitment to serving the Sunset Park community remains steadfast. In partnership with the Fifth Avenue Committee, we have recently redeveloped our branch to include over 20,000 square feet of library space and 49 units of affordable housing, with special accommodations for victims of domestic violence.
Join the Friends of Sunset Park Library, a dedicated group of volunteers who support our mission through advocacy, fundraising, and promotion. Interested in becoming a Friend? Speak with a staff member or email friends@bklynlibrary.org.
We invite you to visit and discover all that the Brooklyn Public Library - Sunset Park Branch has to offer. Your involvement helps us continue to be a beacon of knowledge and community spirit in Sunset Park.

"The general environment is fine, although sometimes it is noisy due to kinds of reasons. Most importantly, if its working hours can be extended, that would be perfect to us!"
"It's a shame because the place had potential. However, the situation is exacerbated by an overbearing security guard who creates a tense atmosphere. His constant, loud patrolling, coupled with intrusive inspections of personal spaces (authoritatively walking between and looking over people's books/laptops, in rooms, restroom etc) disrupts the quiet learning environment. This power-hungry behavior, harassing patrons, resembles a jail warden more than a security officer. After loudly going over to someone, "reminding them for the future“ about something (the other nodded & apologized), ten minutes later approaches again and repeats it loudly, again. One wonders if he has the competence to act appropriately in such social settings in this country. I've never seen anything quite like this in other libraries and it's unacceptable the city pays for this. Despite whatever power games he's playing, thankfully he's just a guard not a police officer."
"I thought a library is supposed to be quiet. Came here to work on a research article, but as one reviewer commented, the staff are chatting like they're in a starbucks! Perfect analogy! Then to top it off the person sitting right in front of me is having a phone call and as tempted as I am to say something, the staff should be the ones setting the example here. I've lived in Sunset my entire life so its nice to have a renovated space to go to, but it seems that the traditional quietness you would expect in a library is something of the past."
"Nice and lovely library, in the sunset park, Brooklyn NY area, Great environment and a very friendly staff. It's quick and helpful customer service, was pleasure dealing with them, and helped me right away with a warm smile, love this place, would really recommend checking it out for any need..."
"Worst library so far, the librarians do not know how to be a proper librarian. They talk too loud, they let people make so much noise. They'll yell at a kid who just wants to hang out in safety to play games on a computer, which I see no problem with as long as they are quiet and have a library card to use the computers of course. A library is supposed to be quiet and that goes for the workers too. They should learn the proper work ethics as a librarian and how to treat customers. It's supposed to be a safe quiet haven for book lovers and tech lovers."
