Amanda Farías, a lifelong Bronxite and a proud second-generation Afro-Latina of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, has deep roots in the community she serves. Raised in Soundview, she is a product of local schools and community institutions. Amanda attended P.S. 69X and Holy Cross School, and spent her formative years at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. She is an alumna of Preston High School and St. John’s University, where she earned both her Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Government and Politics.
Amanda's commitment to community service, activism, and empowerment began in her youth and continues to drive her work today. Currently serving her second term as the Council Member for the 18th District, Amanda was first elected in 2021 and re-elected in November 2023. Her leadership and dedication to her constituents have been recognized through her historic appointment as the Majority Leader of the New York City Council in January 2024, making her the first Latina to hold this esteemed position.
Under her leadership, the New York City Council has entered a new era of diverse representation, with all top leadership roles being held by women of color. Amanda Farías is committed to advocating for the needs of her district and championing policies that promote equity and justice for all New Yorkers.
