About the Business

Canio's Books

Welcome to Canio's Books, a cherished cornerstone of Sag Harbor, New York, where literature and art converge to create a vibrant cultural hub. Nestled at 290 Main Street, our unique establishment serves as an art gallery, bookstore, and community gathering space, celebrating the written word and artistic expression in all its forms.

At Canio's Books, we pride ourselves on hosting a diverse array of events that captivate and inspire. From engaging workshops with renowned actors like Meg Gibson, who recently guided participants through the art of memorization, to sellout readings by celebrated authors such as Colson Whitehead, our events foster a deep connection with literature and the arts. These gatherings, often held in historic and welcoming venues like the Christ Episcopal Church, offer a platform for meaningful discussions and cultural enrichment.

Our commitment to the literary community extends beyond our bookstore walls. We are passionate advocates for preserving literary heritage, as demonstrated by our involvement in the Steinbeck House preservation project. This historic site, where John Steinbeck penned some of his most iconic works, now stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community support, offering a serene retreat for writers and visitors alike.

Celebrating over 40 years of continuous operation, Canio's Books remains dedicated to providing a welcoming space for book lovers and art enthusiasts. Our shelves are lined with carefully curated titles, from timeless classics to the latest literary treasures, ensuring there's something for everyone. As we look to the future, we invite you to join us in our literary journey, whether by attending our events, exploring our collection, or contributing to our ongoing projects.

Visit Canio's Books and experience the magic of a place where stories come alive, art inspires, and community thrives. We look forward to welcoming you to our warm, book-lined haven in the heart of Sag Harbor.

"Canio's Books is as if an angel picked up a bookstore in Greenwich Village in the 1950s and planted it, unchanged and unchanging, in Sag Harbor. Canio, Maryann and Kathryn make everyone feel at home among stacks and stacks of books. In a world gone made with electronics and instant gratification and being high-tech, Canio's is an oasis of hope and enlightenment. Viva Canio's."

"Super friendly owners who curate a very eclectic selection of thought-provoking and mind-bending literature. Easy beach-reads all the way through to life-changing biographies. Great atmosphere, stacks full. Lots of scheduled readings. Especially loved the recent event with Skip Raeback and Gerard Doyle. Gorgeous sunset after."
