"I attended a new-patient appointment with a family member who has a history of eating disorders and body image disorders. Part of their treatment for these (with their mental health providers) is declining routine weigh-ins at doctor visits and only doing them when medication must be prescribed and an accurate weight must be had. The patient has stated this with several previous providers and it has never been an issue before. At this initial visit, the patient was told they needed to get their weight. The patient kindly told the nurse that they will not be doing a weight and the exchange went back and forth several times. When it was kindly declined for the 4th time, Dr. Noack told the patient it was legally required for her to take a weight at each visit in order for them to be a patient. This is categorically false and there is no legal requirement for a patient to be weighed. That may be the office policy, but there is nothing FORCING her to weigh a patient. In fact, patients have a legal and ethical right to direct what happens to their bodies, and this includes refusing any treatment, testing or assessments. Instead of asking the patient WHY they were refusing, or looking into the medical history, she insisted a weight be taken before any further care would be provided. At that point, the patient realized that their wishes would not be respected by this provider and made the decision to leave the appointment. In this day and age of "trauma informed care" I was disappointed and disgusted with the lack of respect, care and kindness shown to this family member. I do not recommend anyone going to this provider if you are seeking someone to treat the "whole person"."
