"I searched & emailed places for months before deciding on Thistle Witch. As a young queer woman, I've never felt super comfortable in typical hypermasculine tattoo shops and couldn't see myself being honest about what I was looking for or speaking up if I wanted something done differently. For my first tattoo, I was looking for somewhere with a more welcoming environment where I wouldn't be afraid to ask for exactly what I wanted without compromising quality and professionalism. I saw that Thistle Witch was queer friendly and not male-dominated like most places I've been to and I'd been downstairs before and found the place charming and the staff friendly and helpful, so I met with artist Cora (@swamp_crone on Instagram) to talk about what I was looking for and what it would cost. Being upstairs, even on a busy day, I felt more relaxed and safe than I ever have in a shop. It's bright and artsy and anyone who wasn't busy didn't hesitate to say hello. Cora was super nice and receptive to my ideas and the meeting was quick and painless. Their wasp design was perfect and she made certain it was the right size and placement I wanted. The wasp is ~4" long and its head is only the size of my pinky fingernail but there is SO much detail that my phone can't capture. The music and eclectic environment really help to distract from the (minimal) pain, too, and it was over before I knew it. I'm super cheap with other stuff but I *really* believe that good artwork and careful application is worth any cost. That said, for the meeting, original artwork, fully shaded piece with white ink highlights and detailed work that took just over an hour, it was still only about ~$150 total. I'd still be happy if it cost much more, but I'm a student so it was a pleasant surprise that made it possible to tip extra. TLDR; If you're looking for a welcoming, artsy, and reliable place to get a tatt, I can't recommend Thistle Witch enough! Definitely a great choice for a first tattoo."
