Tumco Historic Mine
Ogilby Road, Winterhaven, CA 92283
About the Business

Tumco Historic Mine is a fascinating tourist attraction located on Ogilby Road in Winterhaven, California, United States. This abandoned gold mining town has a rich history dating back over 300 years, with periods of boom and bust. Originally named Hedges, the town was abandoned in 1905 due to over-expansion and debt. Renamed Tumco in 1910, the town saw another unsuccessful attempt to mine for gold.
The discovery of gold by Spanish colonists led to a gold rush in the area, with small mines operated by Mexican settlers for many years. The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1877 further fueled the mining industry, with over 200,000 ounces of gold extracted from the mines in the area. Tumco was a bustling mining town in the 1890s, supporting a population of at least 500 people.
Although little remains of Tumco today, visitors can explore the remnants of this historic mining town and learn about its colorful past. The site is managed by the Department of the Interior and offers a glimpse into the mining history of California. Explore the abandoned buildings and imagine the bustling activity of this once-thriving community. Visit Tumco Historic Mine to experience a piece of California's gold mining heritage.

"Boondocked here Feb-Mar 2024. Super spacious, quiet and beautiful BML land...love it here!"
"This is a self guided tour with a trail. It's very desolate so bring snacks water and be prepared to walk in the heat. Otherwise it was kind of interesting to think about the layers of activity on this site as far back as the 1600s. Tons of rusty old metal, stone walls and foundations. If you are in the area check it out."
"Cool place to explore while camping or boondocking close by."
"Beautiful area with some solitude depending on where you park. Trails for hiking into the back are pretty great. Bring good walking shoes that you also don’t mind getting dirty. The ground is very rocky so you may want something with ankle support."
"Not the best historic site and not much to see. Only a few remains of the perimeter of some historic stone buildings. Nothing exciting but if you are in the area or on the road going by it is a place to stop and check out if it is of interest to you."
