Reviews
"My son was referred to Dr. Allison by his PCP to evaluate a recently diagnosed condition. His experience at UO Health Services was exceptional. Dr. Allison was very responsive and sympathetic to my son's needs with a sense of urgency to treat his condition. Ultimately he was referred to another specialist outside of Eugene. Laurie Monstein in billing was extremely helpful with navigating the referral through insurance. I was relieved to know my son was in such good hands with the professional team at UO Health Services."
"I’ve had some mixed experiences with UO health center, although most of them have been positive. A lot of the nurses and practitioners are very kind and really listen to what you have to say which I really appreciate. Staff who are particularly great include Mary Allison-Smith (best doctor I’ve ever had, actually — so empathetic and effective!), her nurse Brandy Bowers, Rebecca Hagerwaite, and Scott Holt. All of them are so patient and thoughtful — same goes for the triage nurses, they’re all great too. On the less great side, I’ve also had a few staff members who have been pretty short with me and not well trained on cultural competency. In particular was a nurse whose name I forget and Melanie, a front desk person. In all 5 years I’ve interacted with her she has acted rude and judgemental to the point of being unhelpful. In fact, she has a reputation amongst UO students for her poor customer service skills and I’ve heard multiple people say that they hesitate to interact with the health center because they feel so unwelcomed by Melanie. I hope this changes so that students feel comfortable accessing medical care on campus."
"They misdiagnosed my daughter and she ended up in the emergency room that night! She went in because of a possible UTI and side pain that she thought could be kidney pain. The Dr/PA at UO said it wasn't her kidney after pushing on a few areas and probably skeletal and asked her if she wanted to take an STI test? They did give her some antibiotics for a UTI but we found out later they were the wrong ones! That night she was in such excruciating pain and started throwing up that she went to the ER at Sacred Heart on 13th St and they were amazing! They said it was definitely kidney-related and she had a really bad kidney infection and was surprised that UO Health center didn't do a simple test with their hand to check for this and also that they gave her very mild antibiotics that would never help with a kidney infection. SO disappointed in the UO Health Center. I think they are very limited in what they can do. UPDATE: Today I called and talked to the director at UO Health Center and she was very understanding and wanted to hear all about what happened to make changes if needed. Upped the stars from 1 to 2 because of this."
"I was just in earlier today. Just found out I can use my insurance at the health center which is always good news. But to the point of my review, I wanted to thank one of the nurses that ended up taking my vitals, Megan. I initially scheduled my appointment with something that ended up being a false alarm. So I used the appointment as an opportunity to address another issue. There was no one else waiting when I arrived so I didn't think it would be a big issue. Well the first nurse that saw me didn't seem to appreciate the finesse. She was short in conversation and barely looked at me and or entered the room. Then the doctor that saw seemed frustrated at me over it too, even though the office was empty. She also didn't seem to care about my issue until the end of our 15 minute conversation when we figured out I was all good in the hood. I am also confused about my problem doc!! But when Megan was taking vitals and such she was super nice and comforting even as I was one of the last appointments for the day. Specifically to this issue I was pretty worried about. Made sure to get the back story and didn't dismiss my concern. She also had style and cheered me up a bit. Sweetness goes a long way when the pandemic has created such an anti-social atmosphere. I can understand the frustration of the other employees, but I wasn't trying to step on any toes so some grace would've been appreciated. I will say though, the check in and the process of going from check in to my appointment was seamless and appreciated. So props to them for that. And give some props to Megan as well! Cheers"
"It's been a busy season with students catching colds and coming in, I get it. But I don't understand dismissing patients without seeing them or dismissing their concerns. I also don't understand not wanting to help students who call. As anyone working at the UO health center, I expected them to want to help me figure out what was wrong, turns out that is not the case. I am truly disgusted by what I went though given how series my condition is and how quick they were to dismiss me. I called this morning because I can barley talk. My sore throat started last Wednesday and this morning I woke up feeling like my airway was closed. The woman on the phone asked my pain level... I said 9. In a very demeaning way she responded with "oh so, you think you're going to pass out?" Very unprofessional as if I can't feel pain without needing to pass out. She said there were no appointments today because they are reserved for people who have more than one symptom (sore throat) and have had it for longer than I had. I was told I can speak to a nurse over the phone. This nurse said to drink warm water and that there's nothing they can do because there are no appointments. I go to urgent care, turns out I have a medical emergency and need to go to the hospital today for surgery on my throat. Both women I spoke to on the phone, mainly the first, came across as though she did not want to help. And since there were no appointments there was nothing she could do but refer me to someone who told me to drink hot water. Meanwhile, I'm sitting in the hospital waiting for surgery. If this is how they treat all of their students, UO is not the campus I thought it was. I am appalled at the way I was treated over the phone by these women. They did not want to help. I am embarrassed to say the UO health center has staff that behave in this way. Extremely disappointing."
