"I was a student at Johnny Matthew’s and I have to say, while the students and some of the instructors are amazing, my experience as someone who has never used clippers was very disappointing. I came in with a very positive attitude but that quickly was dampened when I took the time to observe the dynamic and the way things were done at the school. The classroom instruction was not tailored to each students individual learning abilities and the instructor seemed to have power/control issues. I observed many students struggling, asking for help and being turned away due to “students in the past messing it up for everyone”. It’s a bit difficult to know what you need to improve on, when you’re unable to see what you did wrong because of the actions of students before you. Also, there was no specific program geared toward Spanish speaking students (even the book, which can be purchased in the Spanish edition was not offered). The barbering program itself, is often overlooked and it is obvious it is not the main focus of Johnny Matthew’s. Myself and many of the other barbers have communicated that we feel very inferior compared to the hair design students. While the barbering instructor is an amazing individual ; everyone needs help and he did not have that help. I feel like I paid an outrageous tuition for the instruction received or lack thereof. I learned most of what I know now from the other experienced students and for over 15k that’s simply unacceptable. Furthermore, one of the owners of the school rarely even looked our way, let alone interacted with us. It was almost like he was more interested in the numbers than us as students. With that said, Johnny, Tamara and Dante are the reason that I made it thru. There was constant support, encouragement and motivation from the 3 of them. Some days I wanted to give up, but they gave me reason to keep going. This is not to bash but simply to bring awareness to the dynamic at a school that’s supposed to be the top rated school in downtown Salem."

Like most schools drama exists but if you focus on studies and practicle work it is a great place to learn. You learn a variety if useful cutting and coloring techniques."

"My name is Cheyenne Phillips and I attended Johnny Matthews from 2017-2018. I performed as a level 4 student and specialized in coloring such as highlighting and balayage. I had a great experience at this school and I really believe that if you take advantage of the tools and resources provided at this school that anyone can be a successful hairdresser/barber. I am fully confident that I will succeed in this industry and am very thankful for the great instructors that have provided their knowledge to me.
