Dr. Joel K. Hopkin, DMD

"In September 2020, I fell and broke three bones in my face. At the hospital, I was referred to Dr. Hopkin and was able to schedule an appointment five days after the fall. At the visit, he palpated my face and must have reviewed the CT imaging taken at the hospital four days before. I was told that I needed invasive surgery-- intubation, anesthesia, plates and screws-- and that I needed it fast. Terrified and convinced I was permanently disfigured, I went home in tears after learning the procedure would cost tens of thousands of dollars, as he was out of network. I called around and located another specialist inside my network, who I visited that afternoon. This specialist took new CT imaging and performed an extensive physical examination before offering surgery... but advising that it was not likely necessary, and certainly without risks. I would up forgoing surgery with the in-network specialist, and today there is no indication of the breaks. Surgery turned out to be unnecessary after all. I hesitated to post this review for some time, as I know how hurtful they can be to a business; also, of course, even professionals can misjudge a situation! However, I still find that every time I drive past this facility, I find myself angry (at feeling like the painful and frightening situation I was in that fall had been taken advantage of) and relieved (that I'd found a less distressing option, financially and physically). I remember paying on my way out the door, trying to comprehend what $20k in medical debt would do to my family's future, and the receptionist was offering raffle tickets for a mountain bike. Offering a mountain bike to patients suffering facial trauma felt so silly and frankly a bit alarming. Dr. Hopkin is likely a fine practitioner. Maybe I saw him on an off day, or without the further imaging the other specialist was able to perform, my particular case was mucky enough that surgery really did seem like the safest option. I would just highly encourage everyone to seek a second opinion when it's possible. Doing so certainly saved me tens of thousands of dollars, not to mention the risk of surgery (I work in medical records, and have seen cases in which the patient's broken the same bones I did, had surgery, and then had to deal with migrating hardware-- a nightmare). Check out all your options, folks! And if you're dealing with facial trauma or anything, I wish you the very best of luck for a gentle and effective recovery *edited the year from 2019 to 2020-- it has been a while!"

"Dr Hopkins 5 stars very personable and caring. His business office Pam lies to you schedule surgery then canceled it when trying to reschedule says insurance hasn't approved it. I called the insurance company they put me on hold and called the office got the info from them said was covered. That was a 2 hour phone call. Now Pam still says no pre auth this has been going on for 2 months. Now due to the business office have to look for a different oral surgeon which is unfortunate due to Dr. Hopkins is a great Dr but horrible office staff."

"Dr. Hopkin is an amazing dentist. He is very kind hearted and caring. As well as great at what he does. I had a very tricky wisdom tooth that was on its side, moving towards my other molars and therefore crushing the middle molar. He was able to remove the entire thing despite it being Cloe to a cluster of nerves and I am perfectly fine! To me, that speaks of years of experience and knowledge! Will always be returning to this office in salem for any other dental surgery needs for myself and for my children as they grow."

I had no issues and it went very smoothly. Dr. Hopkin himself even called me on Sunday to make sure I was doing ok after the surgery! I highly recommend him."

"Myself, my father, my son and many friends have been patients of Dr Hopkins. We all agreed he and his staff deserve 10 out of 5 stars. Dr Hopkins goes above and beyond what he needs to do as a surgeon. He greets you with a smile. He takes time to explain everything and addresses all of our concerns. What impressed me most is that he called me himself at 8:00 PM to check on my dad after he pulled his tooth out that morning. Usually it is a staff member that calls the next day, never the doctor. Now that is superb care!!!! I highly recommend OMS and especially Dr Hopkins."
