"I have had a positive experience with both Emily and Whitney. They are helpful with positions and knowledge on what to expect with breastfeeding. The reason for the three stars is because of how my first consultation went and the diagnosis of post anterior tongue tie I received for my newborn. My newborn and I were having issues latching and keeping the latch. I am heavy chested and this is my first child. I would have appreciated more support with my issues but instead was told my baby had a post anterior tongue tie. Almost all my issues I brought up seemed to be caused by this post anterior tongue tie. I know there is a tongue snipping surgery that is very lucrative right now and was warned by my pediatrician to be weary of this diagnosis bc everyone has a post anterior tongue tie and it should only be a cause of concern if it is really tight. This would mean a heart shaped tongue when baby is sticking tongue out, not latching at all, and baby is losing weight. Even though my baby showed he can latch at the consultation and we were already back up to his birth weight I was still given 2 dentist referrals for this tongue tie snipping. The video I was shown at the consultation had cryptic music playing over a faceless doctor talking about the diagnosis. It reminded me of an early 2010 conspiracy video on tongue ties trying to scare me into getting the surgery. This to me felt a little predatory.. Luckily I did some research which is really split with this issue and I have a friend who is a speech pathologist. If you are truly concerned about your babies latch and post anterior tongue tie please ask your pediatrician for a referral to a speech pathologist. They can also help with latch issues and give you a third opinion on this diagnosis. I am now 3 weeks postpartum, I started with the nipple shield but with the positions Whitney showed me, lots of practice and patience I am now able to breastfeed my baby without the nipple shield. He is continuing to gain weight and I will not being doing the tongue tie snip at this time. If I have issues later with latching or his speech that is something I will revisit at that time and be sure to get multiple opinions."
