About the Business

John Ash & Co.

Located at 4330 Barnes Road in Santa Rosa, California, John Ash & Co. is a renowned bar, food, and restaurant institution. Established in 1980, it is recognized as one of Sonoma County's original farm-to-table restaurants, offering a stunning vineyard setting. The culinary team continues the tradition by selecting fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs from their own culinary gardens, as well as sourcing ingredients from over 30 local farms and food producers. With indoor and outdoor seating options immersed in a working vineyard, this is Sonoma wine-country dining at its finest. The restaurant offers dinner service Wednesday through Sunday from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm, as well as a special Mother's Day Brunch Buffet experience. Guests can explore an extensive wine list and enjoy the Homage to John Ash Menu, paying tribute to the founding chef known as the "Father of Wine Country Cuisine". The menu features dishes corresponding to specific pages in Ash's acclaimed cookbooks, with a Three-Course Tasting Menu available from $65 per person. The restaurant accepts all major credit cards and a 20% gratuity is added for parties of 6 or more. Guests with severe allergies or food intolerance are advised to inform their server before ordering. "Fine dining - nope! Fine atmosphere and pricey - yes Food was below par - calamari was soggy, prolly left under the heat lamp. Fine yellow tail - looked like a joke, tasted stale and stringy. Salad - disappointing, drenched in dressing. The food quality was mediocre at best, and that's me being generous. The owners and chef need to look up the phrase 'complex flavors'. Save yourself the money unless you can expense it."

"The atmosphere is terrific— like a mid century, New York steakhouse. And the staff and servers are very attentive and professional if not exactly friendly. But the food is mediocre at best, and in some cases in edible. My sister and I were there for the $55 prefix meal. I ordered the beef and asked for it medium rare—came medium. It was tender but much too salty. The shaved fennel salad was mostly lettuce. My sister ordered the scallops and found them sitting on some thing gummy and inedible. The suggested $26 paired wine was an inferior Chardonnay. She also ordered the pork chops which were small, thin and dry. But what was most annoying about this restaurant was that even though we were there for the prefix dinner, almost everything we ordered had an additional fee—$20 more for the beef, $15 more for the scallops, a basket of mini cornbread muffins an additional $8. Nothing leaves quite as bad a taste in your mouth as expecting to be paying $100 for an exceptional dinner when in fact you end up paying more than twice that for a mediocre meal."

"The food, while decent, comes at a higher price point. However, the fantastic vibe and crew make it a worthwhile experience, earning this place a solid four stars."

"John Ash & Co left a lot to be desired, particularly considering their claim to be a fine dining establishment. I had made a reservation for our anniversary through OpenTable, but when we arrived, we were surprised to find that the main dining room was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Unfortunately, this critical detail was not mentioned on the OpenTable website or app. Instead, we were seated in what seemed to be the hotel bar. Despite this initial setback, we decided to give it a chance, hoping to experience the excellent dining we had heard about. However, we were disappointed to find that the menu was disappointingly short, limiting our options. Our server was friendly, but when we explained the situation and the importance of our anniversary, we received only a brief apology with an explanation that it could be confusing. We ordered two entrees, an appetizer, and a couple of drinks, but things went further downhill from there. The calamari we ordered was greasy and lacked flavor. The pasta my partner ordered was also bland, and the chicken dish I ordered was served completely raw. It wasn't just slightly undercooked; it was raw. We sent the dish back and asked for it to be removed from the bill. The apology we received was both brief and dismissive. To top off the disappointing evening, the waitress brought over two small truffle chocolates as a gesture to make amends. We had hoped that John Ash & Co would have made more of an effort to rectify the situation while we were on site, but unfortunately, they failed to do so. All in all, I can't recommend John Ash & Co as a fine dining destination. It fell short of our expectations, and it's probably best to save your money and try another restaurant in the area for a more memorable dining experience."

"Raw and baked oysters were perfect. Ceviche was not my favorite, but the steak tartare got better with each bite. Cocktails were beautiful and well balanced. Scallops with crispy pork belly were arguably the best we've ever had. Chocolate dessert with blackberries paired exceptionally with the 20 year ports we had to finish our meal. Ambiance and service were impeccable. Great spot for a romantic date. Dinner next to open air windows overlooking the garden and vineyards is as good as it gets."
