About the Business

Whirlpool Cave, located in Austin, Texas, is a must-visit for beginner cavers looking to explore the underground world. This crawly cave will have you on your hands and knees, and even on your elbows and stomach at times. Get ready to get dirty and sweaty as you navigate through the largest room in Travis County. Learn about the cave's importance as a recharge feature of the Edwards Aquifer and discover the fascinating cave inhabitants that call Whirlpool home.
Public beginner trips are limited to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, and must be booked in advance by emailing whirlpoolcavetrips@gmail.com. This is not a typical tour, but rather an opportunity for those interested in caving and cave conservation. Guided trips are required, and group sizes are limited to 5 participants. Unfortunately, large group trips and youth groups are not accommodated at this time.
Participants are required to bring their own equipment, including knee pads, elbow pads, gloves, and a headlamp. Helmets are available to borrow, but open-toed shoes are not permitted. Caving can be strenuous, so individuals with serious health issues should assess their fitness levels before signing up for the 2.5-3 hour adventure.
Support the conservation efforts of the Texas Cave Management Association (TCMA) by volunteering, donating, or becoming a member. Your contribution helps protect and preserve this unique underground ecosystem. Experience the thrill of caving at Whirlpool Cave and embark on an unforgettable journey into the depths of the earth.
Reviews
"Love the trails for trail biking or hiking. There is also a well maintained walking/running/bike path if that's your preference."
"Great experience. Cool cave. Rough. Not a “tourist” cave. I went with an outdoor adventure crew from a local university."
"Went with my wife and it's a nice walk, but we weren't able to find the cave. There's a risk of accidentally walking onto private property but we found most people had fenced off or posted a sign to let you know before a possibly uncomfortable encounter. There seemed to be pretty extensive biking trails so if you're looking to do some trail riding I bet this would be a good place to checkout. Depending on what you're looking for this might be fine for you, but it's not a simple walking path nor a neat landmark."
"Cave is close to the parking lot. It is covered with a grate, but you can look down into it. Not much else there, but there is a whole lot of trails for walking or riding your bike."
