About the Business

Lower Madera Canyon Campground is a part of the Big Bend Ranch State Park, located in Redford, Texas, United States. This remote campground offers a unique outdoor experience for the adventurous traveler. The park features rugged mountains, steep canyons, amazing views, and unparalleled night skies in a high desert setting along the Rio Grande on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, paddling, horseback riding, and exploring by vehicle on two- and four-wheel-drive roads. The park has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park, making it a great spot for stargazing. With 238 miles of multiuse trails, 70 miles of dirt roads, and access to the Rio Grande, there is plenty to explore in this vast state park.

Campers can choose from drive-up or hike-in primitive sites, equestrian sites, or lodging at the Sauceda Bunkhouse. The park also has a paved airstrip for those flying in. Permits for backpacking, camping, and river use can be obtained at various locations within the park.

Commercial outfitters offer guided tours and rental equipment for activities such as kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, horseback riding, and more. Nearby attractions include the Balmorhea State Park, Fort Davis National Historic Site, Davis Mountains State Park, Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center, and the McDonald Observatory.

Reservations are highly recommended due to the park's capacity limitations. Visitors are advised to prepare for extreme summer heat, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees and reaching as high as 130 degrees in the sun. Motor homes and trailers are not recommended due to the rugged dirt roads leading to the Sauceda Ranger Station.

Experience the beauty and solitude of the Big Bend Ranch State Park at Lower Madera Canyon Campground, where adventure awaits in the heart of the Texas desert.

"Best campground along the river. Nice shelters, big areas, lantern hangers, fire rings, toilets and unlike other campgrounds in the area, it's flat for tents and the thick vegetation provides nice privacy."

"This is a beautiful spot and well-maintained by the park service, so they deserve 5 stars. The problem is that the river access is utilized by kayaking and canoe tours which mean an almost constant flow of vans and trailers through the camping area. They are noisy and kick up a dust cloud every time they pass through which is very often. Great park, but would not recommend this spot."

"Great campsites! Clean toilets. Otherwise primitive. Bring plenty of water. Wonderful sunsets. Incredible sunrises."

"Quiet spot for dry camping, with awesome views of the Rio Grande and Madera Canyon. There are four sites available, but Site 3 easily affords the best view. As of Jan 2020, cost is $12/night + an additional day pass fee of $5/person per day."

"Majestic views overlooking the Rio Grande river...despite the primitive location, area was clean and well maintained by the State Park. Definitely would return to this location"
