"I found out about Koy Killen because one day I was taking my children to their orthro appointment which is directly next door to his office and I just happen to look up and notice the attorney office. I felt like it was God who led me there because I had been in prayer for a good real estate attorney. I called Koy and we briefly discussed my case. He told me he would dig a little deeper, do some research to see if he felt I had a case and call me back. He did just that, a few hours passed he called me back, we spoke a little more in detail but my husband was on the call this time. I shared with Koy on that phone call the dollar amount I would like to seek, he then said we could speak more about that at the consultation which we scheduled for the following week. My Husband and I showed up to the appointment, we met with Koy and his other attorney DaNae. They listened and at that moment I said the dollar amount I wanted. He then asked me where that number is coming from I explained how I came up with that number and he advised me that we need to be lower. At that moment we were both in agreement that we would like to proceed. He said we would do a demand letter first. We also discussed possibly having to file a lawsuit and I was very aware of his process. I paid a $3,000 retainer fee and was told the demand letter would go out by Friday. This appointment was a Monday so were talking about 4 days later. It didn't go out until the next Friday. A couple of days before the demand letter went out Koy and Danae called me at 2 separate times to discuss the draft of the letter. I asked both of them how much of the retainer was used so far and they both told me roughly half. We couldn't agree on the demand amount which was shocking because I was very transparent in where I wanted to be and he was very transparent with where he thought I should be but I only paid $3,000 to retain him because I left the consultation feeling we were in the middle. The conversation didn't go as smooth as I was expecting because Koy told me that he wouldn't be comfortable with going to trial with the amount of money I wanted. I made it clear and came down to what he said and he still took my retainer fee and basically decided it wouldn't be a good fit. He told me he would send the demand letter off with the dollar amount I was comfortable with but he would tell the people I was filing a claim against to contact me directly. I called and him asked if at least he would allow them to send their response to them and just forward it to me and we can terminate the relationship at that time. Once the response was sent he charged me $300 to review and analyze it when it was already agreed upon that he would just forward me the response and we would terminate. I'm still unsure of the work that was done but I went in with the intention to retain an attorney for a possible suit and ended up being charged $2,295 for a demand letter and that is with courtesy credits he applied. My total invoice for them to review a few emails, listen to two 2 minute audio recordings and send a demand letter was $3,825. He said he applied courtesy credits but I'm unsure of how the last conversation had I was told I had used roughly half and no more work had been done because all evidence had been reviewed and included in the letter. My case is about me getting justice and the situation with Koy had me feeling like I was taken advantage of because had I known he wasn't willing to possibly fight my case in court from the beginning I would have never spent $3,000 retaining him and basically ended up spending $2,295 for a demand letter and I could have paid a few hundred bucks to get a company that only serves demand letters to do that. My advice is to do some interviewing with several attorneys before retaining and make sure they understand you and your case fully before just trusting them because of their credentials."
