The building was technologically advanced for its time, utilizing the Carrier Conduit Weathermaster Air-Conditioning System and lightweight concrete to combat humidity.
Originally completed in the late 1940s, the Melrose Building became a landmark in Houston, serving as an introduction to modern architecture for many residents. Its prominent location near the Gulf Freeway made it a standout for visitors entering downtown from the southeast.
In 1969, the building underwent exterior changes, including the replacement of turquoise glazed ceramic tiles with bronze anodized aluminum panels. The Melrose Building was later rehabilitated into a hotel and renamed Le Meridian, preserving its historic significance in the city's architectural landscape.
