About the Business

The Terlingua Cemetery is a small burial ground located in the Terlingua Ghost Town in Terlingua, Texas. This historic cemetery is the final resting place for miners who tragically lost their lives while mining for mercury in the early 1900s. The gravesites are marked with simple crosses and handmade embellishments, reflecting the humble nature of the cemetery. Despite its somber history, the Terlingua Cemetery offers a unique glimpse into the region's past, with makeshift graves and folk art memorials. During the Day of the Dead celebration, the cemetery is adorned with colorful flowers, candles, and paper streamers, creating a beautiful and poignant tribute to the deceased. Visitors to the cemetery can also enjoy stunning views of the Chisos Mountains and the Sierra del Carmens in the distance.

"Very serene and unique cemetery. Some gravesites are very old. Many reflect the unique individuals who are forever interned here."

"The uniqueness of Terlingua surrounds the entrance of Big Bend and is a must stop for anyone that decides to venture into these vast landscapes of beauty. I truly enjoyed the 30 or so minutes walking around the cemetery of Terlingua and taking photographs."

"Those buried here include miners and families from 1900s/20the Century to current day. Really eclectic. Each grave unique. Next to the ghost town. Stop and visit. My favorite prayer from St. Gertrude for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory- Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners every where, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen."

"it's my favorite cemetery. have photographed it for years. Day of the Dead is a celebration of life, an event I try to attend each year. I will be buried there."

"This is as much of a ghost town as you will get in Texas, it's the entrance to Big Bend and the cemetery definitely looks genuine enough, not the recreations of Tombstone AZ or Dodge City KS. Interestingly enough, the Terlingua mining district was the principal supplier of quicksilver in the entire US through mining of cinnabar ore right up until 1937 and it continued supplying quicksilver through WWII."
