"The Shoe area didn't have much. The guy working there didn't know much. I wanted to try on a shirt. The guy at the dressing room turned around. Looked at me and turned back around and started working with clothes. Then he went to the end. And took off the other way so I put the shirt down and I left."

"I brought in some Hoka Challengers to return. I only owned them for three months and did less than 150 miles, and they were already breaking down and caused a minor injury. Without asking me about my usage or experience, I told them my injury and how short of a timeline I had the shoes and they told me it was “normal wear and tear”. They would not return them. For the record, I consider these shoes a piece of gear that was an investment and expected the standard lifespan of 350-500 miles and/or 6-12 months when I bought them. They’re already dying at half of the minimum life expectancy. I give two stars because I was standing in line, the employees all seemed very friendly to every customer ahead of me in line. They were friendly with me as well, but I think asking a few more questions instead of shutting me down would have been the better move. On a third note, REI corporate just mass emailed a blog post called “Funny Reasons People Return Gear”, so I think that’s sending a pretty mixed message to members."

"I went to REI for the first time ever to get help with preparation for a major hike this year. I encountered 4 different sales people and everyone was so very helpful. I don't often find this kind of customer service any more. What a great experience for me today! Thank you!"

"Waited patiently for 25 minutes to purchase a set of downhill skis, boots, and poles Absolutely no service or communication as to when someone could possibly even assist me. Left the store after 30 minutes standing in the same area. Went and purchased a complete set from a competitor at a better price Won’t ever return"

"I was shopping with my 20-something son for hiking gear. I as amazed at all that goes into selecting a backpack and the service the REI gives to it. I admit that I know next to nothing about it, but watching the store employee (sorry I didn't catch his name) add a variety of weights to the bags as my son tried them out, and explain not only what the features of each were, but why that is important was reassuring. They measured him, fitted him, and instructed him for his first 5 day hiking experience. The attention to detail was comforting."
