About the Business

Selmier State Forest

Selmier State Forest, located at 2900 North 90 East, North Vernon, Indiana, is a 355-acre park with multi-use woods and hiking trails. It offers access to the Muscatatuck River and is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The forest was donated to the State of Indiana by Stella Selmier in honor of her late husband, Frank, who had a passion for the outdoors.

The property features a variety of tree species planted by Frank Selmier from 1921 to 1934, including pine, black locust, black walnut, sycamore, and tulip trees. Most of the land was placed in Indiana’s Classified Forest Program before becoming state land in 1944.

While there are no public restrooms, camping facilities, or horse trails on site, visitors can enjoy fishing and access to the Muscatatuck River. Popular fish species in the area include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, perch, and catfish. Hunting is also permitted on the premises, with white-tailed deer, turkey, squirrel, and raccoon among the available game.

Hikers can explore the network of trails within the forest, with intersection markers to guide their way. The one-mile Self-Guided Forest Management Trail offers information on tree identification, successional areas, and timber stand improvement practices. Visitors are advised to wear bright clothing during hunting season and to use caution when hiking the power line corridor. Nearby camping options are available at Versailles State Park and Muscatatuck County Park.

"Really nice area for a hike. The footing is good with loose gravel for most of it. I did around 4 miles but there are other logging type roads to up the mileage if you want. The views along the river are nice and you’ll see the old ruins of a dam and an old cemetery with some beautiful headstones and some soldiers from the War of 1812."

"Nice trails and walking. This was just a lil off a front trail. I was told is a spot built to sit and look at reflection pond. It once had lights in it. Of course over time the glass bottles have been broken off on most of it."

"Nice small state forest. The paths are gravel and the map is pretty easy to follow. The view of the river from the main gravel road is beautiful."
