About the Business

The Bluffs of Beaver Bend, located on Spout Springs Road in Shoals, Indiana, is a stunning park and tourist attraction that is a botanical and geological wonderland rich in history and local lore. Towering sandstone cliffs overlook the White River, adorned with colorful ferns and a variety of lower plants that create a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. The area has a rich history, with Native Americans using the bluffs as shelter and the river as a source of food, and tales of moonshiners, bootleggers, and buried treasure adding to its mystique.
Owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Indiana Division of Nature Preserves, the Bluffs of Beaver Bend is a gem that offers permanent and sustainable protection. The preserve is known for its variety of ferns, trees, shrubs, mosses, and other plants, as well as being a haven for migrating birds such as Warblers and Woodpeckers.
With a road running between the East Fork of the White River and the preserve, the Bluffs of Beaver Bend is one of the most accessible preserves the Conservancy has to offer. While trails do not yet exist on the preserve, visitors are encouraged to explore with caution and enjoy the natural beauty of this remarkable destination.
Reviews
"I love hiking through this preserve. The sandstone cliffs are stunning."
"Short hike that is steep in parts. Has a good lookout point but mainly wooded trail. Summer time growth kind of blocks the view point."
"This place is a jewel in scenic Martin County Indiana. Great place to hike, birding and just experience nature. A great success story of caring landowners and partnerships between organizations and state and federal government. The Nature Conservancy, USDA, Indiana DNR, and Martin County. Crown jewel of Martin Co"
"A beautiful place in several seasons and well worth the visit. Drive in on Spout Springs Road and you'll find a small parking area. The bluffs can be viewed walking along a flat gravel road at their base which also follows the white river. A new trail is also available to go to the top of the bluffs (great view), with the option to take a 2.7 mile loop through the woods at the top. The trail is lovely, but slightly rugged (which I liked). A must see in spring when the wildflowers are blooming, also a good spot after a rain as small waterfalls come off of the rocks."
"Striking view over the bluffs down to the river. Close to several other good spots including Jug Rock, Shoals scenic overlook, and Martin State Forest. Honestly, I would take the ridge trail up to the bluff edge but turn around once it starts to veer back into the preserve -- 95% of the view is in the first 20% of the hike, and you would get more value out of exploring the nearby locations listed above. There is quiet southern forest on the rest of the trail but nothing remarkable."
