This National Historic Landmark, also known as The Apple Tree House, is a park that hosts free humanities lectures, history exhibitions, heritage celebrations, and special events throughout the year. Run by the Museum of Jersey City History, the house is a hub for learning about the rich history of Jersey City. Recently, the City of Jersey City commemorated Chadian Independence Day by proudly displaying the flags of the United States and the Republic of Chad together at City Hall, celebrating the diversity and positive contributions of the Chadian community to Jersey City and beyond. "It was Saturday, May 18th 2019 when I went to the local beauty supply store and stumbled upon the "Bergen Square Day" celebration. The sun was shining brightly, the weather was nice and warm so it was the perfect day to celebrate. The entire Bergen Avenue area from Sip Avenue through Highland is historic. On that day, we were able to get a glimpse into the past when the doors to The Van Wagenen house (Apple Tree house) were opened to the public. The entire area was Dutch and we learned that the smaller part of the house was built first in order to give the people shelter in the quickest way possible. The larger part would be added on after they had settled in the area for a while. During the visit, guests got to see a copy of the deed and the property owner's "inventory" which included 3 slaves."

"Discovered this unique piece of Jersey City history during its annual Apple Festival. Tour during the festival was crowded but guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The preservation of the site is well done and tasteful. The house is beautiful. Can't believe it took so long to find this interesting spot."
