About the Business

Burnett Woods

Burnett Woods Nature Preserve is a peaceful oasis located in Avon, Indiana, amidst a developed area. This park offers a serene hike through mature woodlands, showcasing a variety of trees such as black walnut, oak, hickory, and more. The preserve is especially beautiful in the fall with vibrant colors and in the spring with blooming wildflowers.

Visitors can enjoy two marked loop trails that are perfect for hiking with young children. The property also features slow-moving streams that add to the tranquil atmosphere. Thanks to a generous gift from Ruth Burnett, this nature preserve was opened to the public and has since become a beloved destination in Hendricks County.

Parking is available at Light and Life Methodist Church next door to the preserve, and visitors are asked to follow detour signs during road construction. Join the preserve cleanup events and help maintain this beautiful natural area. Burnett Woods Nature Preserve is a must-visit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a peaceful escape in the midst of urban development.

"Cute, short trails tucked away behind a church area. Follow the address and park in the parking lot towards the back. From there, we followed the vague vehicle track around the outskirts of the meadow until we found the preserve opening. Before you get into the woods area the trails are thin. You’ll find many plank paths for presumably when the trails are wet, and overall enjoyable, flat dirt/grass trails. Nothing too crazy here but perfect for the Sunday stroll or after work exercise. Approximately 2 miles total in trails. We walked the whole thing in barely an hour. Glad we stopped by. Probably won’t need to visit again."

"What an awesome secluded nature preserve! We got lost several times getting there but had to read reviews on how to find it! We parked at the church next door and walked through the grass field and there was the opening! Lots of wildlife and plants to observe. Our family had a blast!"

"Parking is available at the church just west of the listed location. Listed location is in fact an "entrance" to the trail. There is another entrance, north of the church, past the tall grasses. When it's been raining the trails will be muddy, likely real muddy, but you'll have that anywhere. Any sort of map would be super helpful. But it looks like whoever manages this preserve is getting their ducks in a row. Will visit here again."

"Awesome place for a quick hike! The trails and parking are very clearly marked. The main grass trail was pretty over grown when I went today. I contacted Central Indiana Land Trust to see if I could volunteer some mowing time to tidy up! CSX yard is not too far away and you can hear it pretty well. The sound of progress and the beauty of this property meld pretty well together."

"I thought it was a bit odd having to walk across a field in order to access it. The Prairie part had a bit high grass on the trails but other then that the trails weren't to bad. It's a bit bigger then you would think."
