About the Business

Boyington Oak Tree

The Boyington Oak Tree is a historic and legendary oak tree located in Mobile, Alabama. The tree is said to have grown from the heart of Charles R. S. Boyington, a man who was wrongfully convicted and executed for a murder he did not commit in 1835. Despite his protests of innocence, Boyington was sentenced to death by hanging. Before his execution, he proclaimed that an oak tree would grow from his heart to prove his innocence. True to his words, an oak tree did grow on top of his grave, where he was buried in the Church Street Graveyard. The Boyington Oak still stands today, reaching approximately 60 feet tall with branches as long as 110 feet. Some people claim to hear crying and whispering noises near the tree, leading to beliefs that Boyington's ghost remains nearby, seeking vindication. Visit the Boyington Oak Tree at 107 South Bayou Street in Mobile, Alabama to witness this unique piece of history.

"Mary did a very good job of reseaching the background of the historical account of Boyington Oak. She also did a nice job with writing and filling in the "creative" parts of the story. Did Charles do it for sure we will never know but there are many questions left unanswered in my opinion."

"Beautiful historic old tree right outside of the Church Street Graveyard. At one time, this tree was inside the graveyard, it was the area where the poor & indignant were buried. The tree is labeled with a historic marker next to a local business that is presently vacant. Directly across the street from The Boyington Oak is a historic church built in 1896 and two beautiful older homes. Located at the cross streets of Government & South Bayou Street, it is a short walk from downtown Mobile and an enjoyable one because you can see all the historic homes and buildings along the way. My dog and I stopped and rested in the shade under the other nearby oak trees to enjoy the view."

"Fascinating tour of Historic Mobile but unfortunately other touring family was a distraction as the children in their group were not as seriously interested as the rest of our group and family"
