About the Business

Carlile’s Barbecue

Carlile’s Barbecue is a historic institution located at 3511 6th Avenue South in Birmingham, Alabama. Established in 1945 by the Carlisle Brothers after their service in World War II, this restaurant has been serving up savory barbecue and desserts for over 70 years. The misspelling of the last name was a result of a mistake in the Armed Forces, but the brothers decided to keep the Carlile version for their new venture.

Today, Carlile’s Barbecue is owned by the Collat Family, who purchased the restaurant in 2007 to preserve its history and build a future that includes all customers. The restaurant has hosted famous political, civic, business, and sports leaders, but its main focus remains on serving families and individuals.

With Executive Chef and General Manager Maureen Holt at the helm, Carlile’s Barbecue continues to serve award-winning barbecue with a mix of original recipes and new flavors. The restaurant, located in what was once the founders' home and gambling pub, offers a unique dining experience that blends history with delicious food.

Whether you're hosting a large party, family dinner, or office meeting, Carlile’s Barbecue offers catering options that can be customized to meet your needs. With daily catering and delivery services available, you can enjoy their famous barbecue wherever you are. Iron City Lofts, a luxury apartment development in downtown Birmingham, is conveniently located just 7 blocks away from Carlile’s Barbecue in the Lakeview Neighborhood.

"Love this place! Smoky barbecue and their brown barbecue sauce is one of a kind. They have the best fries in the state. If you're a fan of old school barbecue, you need to make the trip to Carlile's."

"Scrumptious BBQ! Really everything was awesome! Staff was on point the whole time. Not in a great part of town, so they close at 3 (just FYI). I was so full that I didn't get to try a dessert. Maybe next time!"

"Best barbecue I have had in town, decently priced and great service. Would recommend the bbq pulled pork sandwich over the bbq beef brisket sandwich but both were good really. Sides were alright but we didn't get to try all of them."

"I stopped by this hidden treasure on my way out of Birmingham and it was fantastic. Fits the definition of home in the wall restaurant to a T…and those are the best restaurants! Fast service and reasonable prices, but the key to their success is the food! And it’s top notch, even for vegetarians. The side dishes are delicious…the Mac and cheese and fries in particular. I’ll definitely come back if ever in Birmingham again!"

"I ordered a pulled pork plate with baked beans and slaw to go. It was ready in less than 5 minutes, but keep in mind this was mid afternoon. Friendly cashier, great experience. Everything was delicious, but most delicious was the "on special" blackberry cobbler."
