About the Business

Wege Foundation Natural Area

The Wege Foundation Natural Area is a beautiful park and tourist attraction located in Lowell, Michigan, United States. The institution features a well-established system of trails that lead hikers through diverse habitats, including mature hardwood forests, young mixed woodlands, and old fields undergoing restoration. Visitors can cool off in Lee Creek, a coldwater tributary of the Grand River, and explore trails on the neighboring Wittenbach Center property.

The trails at Wege Foundation Natural Area are marked with color-coded blazes on the trees, and the natural surface trail is 1.5 feet wide with a gentle grade. The institution is a Category 1 LCWM nature preserve, with designated parking and well-marked trail systems. Interpretive signs, overlooks, and points of interest are available for visitors to learn more about the area's natural beauty.

The Wege Foundation Natural Area protects high-quality natural land in an area dominated by suburban and agricultural land uses. The property features diverse wetlands, native plant species, and abundant wildlife. Restoration projects are underway to protect the forests and wetlands from invasive species and restore oak barrens and oak forest habitats.

The history of the property dates back to European settlement, with previous land uses including clearcutting, pasture, and logging. In 1999, the Cridler family sold the property at a discounted price to preserve it as a place for students to learn about nature. The Wege Foundation generously donated the funds needed to create the nature preserve, in partnership with the neighboring Wittenbach Center.

The Land Conservancy of West Michigan, a nonprofit organization, works to conserve natural land in the area and provide opportunities for people to protect and enjoy the beauty of West Michigan. The Wege Foundation Natural Area is a wonderful destination for nature exploration and education, offering a unique blend of history, conservation, and outdoor recreation for visitors to enjoy.

"Perfect for dogs. Many loops crisscrossing each other so you can easily choose between longer or shorter routes. Plenty of space on both sides of the path to make space when others pass you. Relatively flat. Tranquil and few people."

"Lovely setting to walk through. Had various settings for a unique walk, included oaks and pines, several water ways like a small stream, wetland area and pond and a log cabin on the property. Lots of birds, deer squirrels, and chipmunks"

"This place is lovely. Gorgeous pine forests make you feel small in a good way, and the little hobby farm is so cute. The animals are all friendly if you are calm around them and will come up to the fence to see you."
