"This was my family doctor from infancy to 25 years old, until I was finally diagnosed with several autoimmune issues. I found out at the hospital, after years of trying to get someone to listen to me. I had an appointment with this practice the next day, when I informed them. The night of the hospital visit, I had a very traumatizing experience. After the last demeaning remark/reassuring disbelief, they were forced to acknowledge the positive test results from the hospital. She immediately changed from patronizing to understanding, as if the last 25 years didn't exist. I tried to tell her about possibly reaching gluten ataxia, as I thought I was having seizure activity. She ordered blood tests. The last thing I remember, while getting my blood drawn, is looking down, not able to feel my legs sticking straight out, and the nurse saying, "Is she seizing?" They asked, "Does this always happen?" to which I said, "I have Celiac disease." I don't know if the nurses assumed I knew it was normal to have seizures with Celiac (I didn't- the practitioner assured me kids in her family have "it" and I'd be fine.... very dangerous assumption to make about a TWENTY FIVE year old being diagnosed), but I was fed up with being ignored and didn't bother going back after this last incident. Autoimmune diseases are hard to diagnose... it is how they treated me and silenced me that caused a lot of damage. The practitioners were family friends of mine and they still couldn't keep their small town, bible-belt, oppressive judgments and gossip from interfering with my health. To the practitioner saying I've always been "emotional", "anxious", "problem child", "jobless", "on drugs" (the words of my abusive, estranged family of 5 years - how a practitioner could entertain the idea that I'm on drugs when she's seen my results since infancy, I do not know) ... no, my brain has not always been inflamed. Yes, I was always in pain. The last time you knew me, I was 9 years old. Maybe you're the one stuck in that era's mental state. Incredibly disappointing. Drive your kids to Cincinnati."
