"Once, in a couples therapy session, we joked about Ruth being an auto mechanic. Obviously, we don’t show up at our weekly appointment for a tune up— but stay with me… Ruth leans in and listens to the purrs, the rattles, the clanks. Without judgement or shame, she makes keen observations that invite perspective. She isn’t going to “fix” your relationship but she will hook you up with some reliable tools if you really want to learn how to fix some things yourself. Ruth is genuine and empathetic and she shows unconditional positive regard for both of us. She has helped us see beyond scars and wounds of our past(s) and into a beautiful future of our creating. Sweet as she may be, she doesn’t sugar coat the truth. She lays down her observations and gives examples to provide an opportunity for each individual to draw our own conclusions and strengthen our insight. She celebrates us for who we are and cheers us on for our progress and our little wins, encouraging us all along the way. It hasn’t been easy. It hasn’t been all fun. There have been tears. There have been laughs. And there have been sooooo many words— But it has all been more than worth it. We have seen noticeable difference in our daily lives, since our first appointment. And you know what? As much as I have come to trust her as our therapist, if she told me next week that she was actually a mechanic— Well… I probably would pop the hood."
