"First impression: It’s a mashup of Dick’s and Bass Pro but it’s more female-friendly, with Walmart prices on some items. Country music was playing, all female singers when I visited. There were a lot of men in there looking at the guns, hunting gear and all, but there were just as many women checking out the clothing, hunting gear and sporting goods. While Bass Pro leaves me cold, Academy had me enjoying my shopping experience and they are stocked to the gills. This week’s finds: Cute t-shirts for $4.99! (See photos.) Workout wear at great prices for all ages. Also Christmas stuff. But my dad and my Alabama relatives who love hunting would be the most stoked about shopping the big glass case with pistols and also the shelves with rifles, ammo, decoys, scopes and such (see photos). There’s tons of fishing gear, too. The store workers were very helpful when I asked about a potential gift idea. They didn’t pester me but when I had a question they were easy to find and eager to please. There were five individuals who helped me in one visit. Pretty impressive. I’ll shop here again."
