"This is the note I wrote the office. I didn't hear back from them in months. I found another doctor before our next check up. "I wanted to write to express my concern about my 12-month visit at the Brookhaven location. I had no idea that my baby's blood was going to be drawn, and no one explained that to me until 3 seconds before it was done. After her head circumference, height, and weight measurements were taken, the nurse called me over as she prepared the equipment. I asked what was going on (wondering if the immunization was going to happen before the visit with the doctor), and she just said blood was going to be drawn for vitamin K levels (which was wrong, her hemoglobin was checked). I nodded hesitantly. She started drawing blood right after, squeezing that little finger for a while against the tube. I really believe that was not enough communication to have my real consent, especially for a procedure that is a bit invasive, painful and takes time. My baby cried for 60+ minutes –– including 20 minutes after I left the office, and I will remember this visit as a very traumatic one. It didn’t have to be that way. Someone should come explain what is going to happen and ask for consent before doing it, and the parent should have some time to explain to their child and be ready for when it happens. It could have also be done at the end of the visit instead of before seeing the doctor. Please become better for your other little patients. Dr. Shepard was patient and kind to us. He's witness to the fact that my baby couldn't stop crying for the length of the visit."
