"A few months ago I was scheduled for a diagnostic mammogram because of 3 lumps in my breast felt by myself and my PCP. My first area of concern with this facility was that they had saved my appointment under my maiden name despite my ordering physician having scheduled that appointment under my married name. This I could overlook because I know how busy administrative staff can get. Next, instead of simply performing the diagnostic mammogram that was ordered, because of my age, the facility recommended I have an MRI first. This would have been fine except, I was told that if after looking at those results the doctor felt the mammogram was needed I would have that but if it was not necessary they would not perform that mammogram. After what felt like an eternity of waiting, I was told the doctor did want to go ahead and do the mammogram as well which would imply something unusual necessitated that exam. Again, this would have been fine with me as well but, I was told I could go back to my room but not to get dressed because they may want more images. After making it back to my room I had not even sat down before there was a knock at my door and a tech there handing me a piece of paper telling me I could go and everything was fine. Do not get me wrong, I was overly relieved to hear everything looked fine. What I was not ok with was that at no point did anybody, to include my PCP, come in to speak to me about the results. I was not ok with the fact that it took less than a minute to receive the results of the mammogram as that made it seem as though they were not even glanced over. I understand that breast centers specialize in breast related concerns and can surely easily and adeptly interpret results but I do not. So, what to them was a minor non issue to me was a terrifying and confusing experience. I left the office with no understanding of what the lumps are or could possibly be and that information was either not communicated to my PCP or when they called to give me the results they simply believed a, "you're good" was also sufficient. Breast cancer awareness is touted as being of utmost importance among women and yet, there was not a single bit of explanation or clarity offered after having these tests performed. My hope is that this review will garner some kind of attention for properly relaying information to patients who seem to be "lower risk.""
