About the Business

Lookout Mountain Civil War Battlefield

Lookout Mountain Civil War Battlefield is a historic tourist attraction located at 110 Point Park Road in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. This institution offers visitors a glimpse into the events that unfolded during the Civil War, specifically the Battle of Lookout Mountain. The Confederate Army's pursuit of the Union Army to Chattanooga led to a siege, with Confederate troops strategically positioned on Lookout Mountain to observe and shell Union positions below. The Battle Above the Clouds, fought on November 24, 1863, is a key event that took place on the northern slopes of Lookout Mountain.

Point Park, a ten-acre memorial park overlooking the battlefield and Chattanooga, features historic tablets, monuments, and Confederate artillery positions. The New York Peace Memorial, erected as a tribute to peace and reconciliation, is a prominent landmark within the park. The Ochs Memorial Observatory offers exhibits on Civil War history and provides stunning views of Moccasin Bend below. Admission to Point Park is $10 per adult, ages 16 and over.

The Cravens House, located on Lookout Mountain, was used as a headquarters and encampment during the Civil War. It was largely destroyed during the Battle of Lookout Mountain but was rebuilt in 1866. Today, the house is open to the public on weekends during the summer months, with no admission fees. The property also features monuments and markers related to the Battle of Lookout Mountain.

Visitors can explore over thirty miles of trails on Lookout Mountain, including old railroad beds from the 19th century and trails built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. Sunset Rock, a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers, offers breathtaking views of the Wauhatchie Battlefield below. The state of New York erected two monuments at the battlefield, which are now part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

Overall, Lookout Mountain Civil War Battlefield provides a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the history of the Civil War in a beautiful and scenic setting.

"This was nice short walk, with opportunity to learn some history and take some fantastic photographs. 20 minute activity at most. There is an entrance fee $10 per person, and you have to pay for parking as well."

"This was a beautiful memorial park that overlooks the Lookout Mountain Battlefield and the city of Chattanooga. It was $10 per person, 16 and over. 15 under are free. It’s stroller and wheelchair friendly. There were many benches to sit and relax. You can see the Tennessee River as well. We spent about an hour there with the kids. Definitely recommend."

"Beautiful grounds with breathtaking views. There was a female park employee who was very informative w/answering our questions. I enjoy history and this was a bucket list trip for me. Covid mandate was required, however there were a few people without mask. It wasn’t concerning for us, as we went later in the afternoon on a Saturday and their wasn’t more than 20 people in the park. The weather was cold and rainy as well, so I’m sure this is why it wasn’t crowded. I wish the souvenir shop was open, but we got there about 20 minutes after it closed. Overall a must to visit."
