About the Business

Madam Brett Park

Madam Brett Park, located on South Avenue in Beacon, New York, is a 12-acre park that offers a unique blend of history and nature. The park is named after Catheryna Brett, the first European settler in the area, who operated a gristmill along Fishkill Creek. Visitors can explore the ruins of the Tioronda Hat Works and enjoy the natural features of the park, including Fishkill Marsh, home to various wildlife such as amphibians, aquatic mammals, ospreys, bald eagles, and migratory birds. The park also features a stunning waterfall on the creek, especially impressive during spring or after heavy rains.

For those interested in learning more about the history of the area, Madam Brett Park offers a short film by Jon Bowermaster/Oceans 8 films, with music by Meena Ysanne. The park prioritizes the health and safety of its visitors, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and requires pre-approval for special events and group outings.

After exploring the park, visitors can check out the shops and eateries along Beacon's Main Street and visit Dia:Beacon, a world-class museum featuring late-20th-century art housed in a former factory. To delve deeper into the life of Catheryna "Madam" Brett, visitors can also visit her 1709 house, the oldest in Dutchess County.

Madam Brett Park has been connecting people with the inspirational power of the Hudson River since 1963, and continues to provide a beautiful and educational experience for all who visit.

"Special place. Very tranquil. Could use some upkeep at the top. I’d love to see a few picnic tables. So much potential here."

"Only stopped here for a short time and saw the water, the bridge and the abandoned buildings. The area was beautiful, the abandoned buildings were a bit creepy (but cool). As I didn't get to explore too much I will keep this short and just say that it seems like a great place to explore and also enjoy nature. Would definitely come back. I also did see some people preparing to fish, so that's an option as well."

"Hidden gem off the beaten path in Beacon. Many little lookouts off of the main trail and connects to long dock park down on the waterfront in Beacon. My new favorite spot for sunsets!"

"Very nice hiking place ! I definitely recommend ending your hiking tour in this place, next to the waterfall. Old buildings might give you some rejection vibe, but I guarantee the views and hiking path would make it up to you, plus it gives some charm to the atmosphere"

"This place never ceases to amaze me. Waterfall at one end, then a stroll by the abandoned Tioronda Hat Works Factory. It's a great walk with various types of land surrounding it. This place has a great local story along the Fishkill Creek. Beacon history. Must see."
